Sticking to hunters / mages

So I am new to the Paladin world. Quick backstory. I forgot I had made a Belf Pally years ago and noticed a little (1) next to a random server that wasn’t my main server. So I check into it and boom! I had a level 48 Paladin I had completely forgotten about and my dumb self was 2 seconds away from spending $60 to boost one. So I immediately watch a quick ret PvP guide and throw some skills on the bar and jump straight into random battlegrounds. My poor teammates.

Anyway, I’m starting to get the hang of it when I find myself getting attacked by some hunters and other non wheelchair classes. Well classes that can kite shall we say.

Outside of HoJ windows and my “Weeee! Hands up I’m on my horsey” how are you supposed to keep from getting kited to death? I’ll try to wake of ashes them and range slow them but it seems like they just disengage / scatter me and now I’m back at 35 yards away from them crypt walk-in’ towards them while my health slowly dwindles.

Halppppp

Well the short answer is you don’t.

AFAIK, paladins in PvP are all about that burst damage.
But in PvE, holy paladins are quite good.

Use unbound freedom into mages, law and order into hunters, unbound freedom also helps. You will never have perfect uptime key is to maximize damage during ur uptime windows

Talking from duel perspective here but

Unbound into hunter is a must, otherwise a good one will just tranq -> reslow you instantly. Versus MM don’t be scared to trinket scatter or trap since they don’t have a stun. Try to reslow the disengage if possible. Versus BM you can consider BoPing the stun if you get stunned on horse. Some hunters may trap your horse if you run straight towards them so be wary of that too. Overall if you use blade of justice, hand, and wake effectively you can force a lot of hunters into a position where they won’t have an escape for at least one of those slows.

Example would be lots of hunters will disengage before slow if you’re somewhat close to them

Overall Mr. Bramot is spot on, all about maximizing your windows vs. hunters

Against good ones, you don’t. It’s that simple. Use LoS and teammates to help you set-up kill windows against them. Even if you do everything right, chasing a good fire mage or MM hunter will result in you getting set-up to be killed. It is unbelievable how fast a fire mage will 100-0 you if combust is up and you get caught in the open. Against the hunter, you have to keep your hp high and/or save bubble, otherwise he will pop resonating arrow and destroy you thru los.

Avoiding all the answers previously given, the best way to deal with them is to not. As soon as you find yourself being harassed at range, find cover. The only way to reliable close the distance between you and them is to force them into a less favorable location. Sad as it is, humping terrain until they’re close enough to deal with is the only answer that works. Outside of that, Hand of Hindrance, Unbound Freedom, Divine Steed and book it.

If all else fails? Bubble Hearth. Thankfully the only classes that can deal with Pally bubble are the only classes similarly restricted to walking…

And this is the reason the cries for ret being nerfed in PvP are stupid. Sure you can blow someone up but only in a very specific window that usually happens once per match

I mean ur a little cooked if you don’t think ret is a little silly rn

They are silly inside their wings, kite them and then the person playing them feels silly.

Others that are a little silly, Convoke druids, Combust Mages, and Arms Wars who are just silly overall.

Out of all of these classes Ret is probably the easiest to outplay due to the massive CD and gimped status outside of their window

Ya except aura of reckoning gives amazing uptime on wings, and they have a go literally every min. You don’t need wings to kill.

Kyrian boomy is better but ya.
Combust mages… do you mean fire mages? I mean I’m not saying those classes aren’t either but you can say ret is a little dumb rn without saying those classes aren’t also dumb.

I mean mage sustain is also worse than ret btw. Boomies outside of cds are also not scary at all.

Arms war is probably the most silly.

I’ll give you that ret is silly I just don’t think we’re the “silliest” and while boom isn’t great outside of convoke it’s only a 2 min CD and they have a much easier time stalling between convokes

I feel my rets build is as good as it gets vs both.

Unbound freedom
Law and order
PvP conduit to buff freedom
Zandalari w/speed loa
Both gems for speed in sockets
Uthers devotion legendary
Double pony

Only use hand of hinderance on a hunter after disengage. I’m currently sitting at I think 124% speed which is huge at keeping up.

Keep in mind a hunter, especially MM will trap a paladin in Freedom.

MM would likely scatter instead

trap is telegraphed if you try to land it outside of hoj range and can be dodged
