Sticking to ElvUI, or swapping to Bliz's new UI

lol? do you have graham crackers stuffed in your DDR2 slots?

I hope you arent still using DDR2… lol

Also, it is not just about how 'Much" memory the addon uses but the fact that an addon that could have major issues is accessing your memory at all… this can cause crashes to even your whole system.

sticking with CTmod this UI blows and is just a rip off of someone elses work…kind of like the new GUI for the talent posts weve had since pandaria

ELVUI is deleted glad to rid that lag hole it was

Going to stick to Bartender and kgPanels. Just like the look much better.

I am going to give the new UI a shot and see how it feels. But I do like that you can move stuff around

Tried the new UI. No go for me - bags, system menus, and quest log can not be repositioned and are stuck at distant edges of my 32:9 ultrawide monitor. Back to ElvUI…

I’ve played with the refreshed Bliz UI for the past few days and coming from someone who has used ElvUI for many expansions here’s where I stand on the ultimate UI question:

Blizzard UI Assessment

  • The scaling options for sizing/positioning many of the UI elements is very impressive and intuitive for the most part. Took a minute to work around resizing the chat window and the weird action bar bug where action icons moved to a blank tile disappear until you use the /reload command or zone into an instance.
  • Nameplates are great and adjustable for the most part. Getting used to enemy cast bar position is probably the biggest challenge I’m personally working through. The other big challenge is how at certain times it’s harder to distinguish what my active target is when there are several enemy nameplates hovering nearby. With ElvUI it’s much easier to distinguish who the target is (without looking at the enemy unit frame.) Could be an adjustment to not using the Bliz UI for over a decade, yet I think there should be a little more “glow” for “here I am” for active targets.

Bliz UI Personal Rating: 8.5 out of 10

I’m going to stick with it for a bit longer after overcoming a very weird graphical issue with the new UI that caused excessive FPS drops & stuttering. I have a very high end computer, and only learned about the recent change Bliz made with respects to how caches are handled on the hard drive (caches were previously managed by RAM.)

To revert the default back to a stutter free experience I ran the following commands while in-game:

/console GxAllowCachelessShaderMode 0
/console gxRestart
  • after running the gxRestart command the game will appear “frozen” or in a locked state for a good 5-10 seconds before returning to a state of normalcy.

Bottom line. Give it an honest try and make an effort to learn the new Bliz UI before making the decision to keep/change what you’re using today.

While the new UI does allow a lot of customization, I am still sticking with Elvui since I already have everything set how I want with it, and don’t feel like trying to get the new UI set up exactly how I have my current Elvui already.

Where did you get a new version of MoveAnything?

So, what do you consider an “acceptable” amount of memory consumption for addons? Just curious.

As to the question, I’m using Bartender4 just like always, because I couldn’t make the new UI look like the old one with the original gryphons and I don’t like the new graphics, and you can’t move the bag menu, the micro menu or the xp bar around.

The mini map isn’t so mini anymore (not to mention being poorly designed and awkward looking if you want it on the bottom of the screen; the mail icon will be floating outside the “window” that contains the minimap and header, so you have to have it all floating above the bottom of the screen. The header is also off center, so it just looks like hot garbage all the way around), so I’ve gone to BasicMap for that, though I’m not thrilled with that either.

Hoping for something else to show up (not really thrilled with SexyMap either–the only thing that looks good is the blue glowy one, and it’s just way to fussy to go with the rest of the UI), or someone with an ounce of design ability at Blizzard will make the default minimap look better eventually, but that’s a slim chance, I’m sure.

I have deleted ElvUI and gone back to stock UI now.

I don’t have an exact number, but at one point I had well over 30 addons and ElvUI was showing a memory consumption rate of roughly 250mb at standard load.

Since then I’ve already eliminated half of those addons with plans to remove a couple more. Most of my customizations these days are done almost exclusively with WeakAuras

On WoWUp. It’s called MoveAny (WIP). It’s by D4KiR. I don’t know how exactly it’s working at the moment. It has been updated since pre-patch. But, has the “(WIP)” in its name. D4KiR also has another addon called MoveandImprove which allows you to move anything as well but as some extra options. It currently works. But, needs to be updated for the mini-map still.

I have

Leatrix Plus
Auctionator
DBM

I’m very happy compared to what I had before of 30+ including NDUI

On a separate note I noticed the dungeon/arena instance queue icon (large green icon) recently moved down to the bottom left of the screen next to the menu icons. Not sure what that’s about but it was more convenient and easier to monitor when it was pinned to the minimap.

Ah, I did see that in another post here, but it’s not really an update to MoveAnything, it’s a totally different addon. I tried it, and if MoveAnything never gets updated, perhaps I’ll stick with MoveAny.

I just moved that with Bartender4, since it was in the middle of the screen with the default Blizz UI. Seemed a silly place for it, and there was no way to move it with the Blizz UI either, at least not that I found.

Well, mine is only at 105 MB atm, so it’s probably not an issue. That doesn’t include things like Details, BigWigs/LittleWigs, CloudyTradeskill (if it ever gets updated), or Narcissus, which I will load eventually though, so maybe that number will rise. I just wondered if there was a number that was “most desirable” to stay under, or something like that.

My weakauras uses more than Elv, and AllTheThings absolutely murders memory usage compared to either of them.

Having just tested both the default UI against my current ElvUI configuration, it’s still lacking, though definitely a massive improvement. I think for me it simply comes down to game play and feedback in the UI based on what I’m doing.

Overall, ElvUI still provide better visual feedback - casting timers, procs, cast bars, etc. Of course the configuration capabilities go without saying, there’s no comparison. I wouldn’t even call the new default UI ElvUI light, it’s just basic at best (but much improved by Blizz standards). As a hardcore UI tweaker, there’s no chance I’m moving back to the Blizz UI at launch. Still, I know my wife has always used the default so for her, it’s probably a nice change, for me… meh… nice try Blizz.
