Status of Gilneas in the year of our lord 2022

So, with the recent Genn-Calia correspondence, here are the total list of contradictory sources re: Gilneas’ fate that I’m aware of.

  1. Cataclysm levelling: the Forsaken invade through the Wall, reach Gilneas City, and the worgen player flees to Kalimdor. The undead player picks off from here, where the Forsaken are driven from northern Gilneas by the GLF, Bloodfang and 7th Legion, who counterinvade Silverpine. The two sides stalemate each other at the Greymane Wall. The city and countryside of Gilneas are not blighted.
  2. Battle for Gilneas BG: the Horde resumes its attack by sea, the Alliance defends the coast.
  3. Legendary rogue questline: the black dragon Creed has taken control of Gilneas City by posing as Gilnean nobleman, leading its Gilnean defenders against continued Forsaken assaults. The city and countryside are still not blighted.
  4. Mists of Pandaria epilogue: Varian says the Alliance will focus on cleansing Gilneas of the blight in the war’s aftermath so the Gilneans can return.
  5. Before the Storm: Genn Greymane implies the kingdom is home to the Forsaken.
  6. Blizzcon BfA announcement: the developers state that the Horde’s intent during the Stromgarde warfront is to secure a base from which to attack Gilneas.
  7. BfA war table: the Forsaken are again trying to attack Gilneas, while the Alliance is attacking Silverpine from Gilneas.
  8. Christie Golden’s twitter: she suggests the Forsaken refugees from Lordaeron temporarily relocated to Gilneas.
  9. Exploring the EK: Gilneas is not mentioned, but the Bloodfang control Shadowfang Keep and Fenris Isle, seemingly having won the BfA war table missions in Silverpine.
  10. Shadowlands epilogue: Calia wants to withdraw the Forsaken from Gilneas and have the worgen return.

Blizzard seems clear on neither who owns Gilneas nor if it was ever blighted and the above sources are seemingly impossible to make coherent.

Please get some narrative quality control and give me my spooky werewolf kingdom back you cowards.

In any other franchise with any other writers I’d say this is just the battle lines shifting in war off-screen but considering who we’re talking about it’s clearly a lack of communication and/or care on the writers’ part.

You forgot the Sylvanas novel where it’s said to be Blighted.

Then nevermind actually the Forsaken occupy it. Why the hell did they sleep in the streets of Orgrimmsr when they had access to a functionally abandoned city? Who knows. Maybe they thought getting some sun would cheer them up.

At this point Gilneas is some field of theoretical quantum physics where it’s changed whenever it’s observed.

My personal favorite inconsistency is the Bloodfang in Hillsbrad.

They’re working with the Stormpike on Purgation Isle and are using that to launch guerilla attacks on Forsaken forces outside the ruins of Southshore.

Now I’d of course presumed they came from Gilneas. But if Gilneas was destroyed that would mean they somehow snuck through Southpoint Gate and just swam there.

Can see why Vanndar and Belinda didn’t seem to eager to stay. The scent of wet dog must’ve been overpowering.
