Static killed my mouse?

I sat down on my fabric recliner, reached over to my mouse and static zapped it. It was a nice Steelseries cataclysm mouse that they don’t make anymore. I’m now using my back up which is a steelseries sensei mouse.

I didn’t know static can kill computer mouse. I thought there’s a protection built on to the computer.

It’s not likely but it’s certainly possible. Electronics are designed to handle a certain amount of static but in the right circumstances, they can be damaged by a shock.

I wouldn’t be too worried unless your only mode of transportation is shuffling across shag carpet in wool socks. It was most likely that the mouse was rather worn out to begin with and you happened to zap it in just the right spot. Like I said, it’s not likely in normal usage for them to be damaged by static shock.

If you’re particularly worried, you can start grounding yourself after moving (since that’s what builds static potential) but before touching your mouse.

Recliner is probably charging you up. I’d use a desk with a mouse pad. Or one of those weird table things people use to eat their dinner on.

That’s what you get for using a steel mouse. I use plastic mice. :slightly_smiling_face:
