So according to icyveins, “A piece of gear with a higher item level than what you currently have should be equipped regardless of its secondary stats.” How true is this when it comes to something like crit, which is supposedly the lowest rated stat, vs haste, which is the highest?
I have a choice between two rings, one of which will put crit as my highest secondary stat, and the other which will put haste in that spot. This means that reorigination array will give me an extra 300 of whichever one I choose. The higher item level ring has crit, so supposedly I should equip that one, but is the 300 additional haste worth equipping the lower item level?
Just make sure every single piece of gear has haste on it. But dont drop 20 ilvls to get it.
Haste > Vers are ideal. Vers buffs the warrior everywhere, with dps, hps(IP mainly) and mitigation.
It’s true for all cases. The difference from haste to mastery or crit is not huge. it’s not like dropping tons of power. Ilvl trumps all. a 380 haste+vers piece loses to a 385 crit mastery piece. Etc, etc.
More ilvl more strengh, armor, stamina and secondary stats. In rings cases it’s a little more critical but 10 ilvl is enough.
I been stacking mastery/crit just for a lot of damage. I think you can do any stat as prot. Just pick something that fits your style. This is coming from M+ tanking. Raids are different.
Into the Fray provides all the haste you need for the spec to work, so stat priority for protection is not really all that important. I would say that ilvl is most important factor.
For rings specifically, I would drop 5 ilvl for haste main stat vs no haste at all but that’s just personal preference because I think it makes the spec play more smoothly, you won’t see much of a difference defensively.
I have always kept around 12-13% base haste and use Into the Fray talent. All of the other stats I just stack via ilvl improvements/azerite traits.
I have been playing with the idea of going prot for a little bit, at least to just play something different. I’ve always seen conflicting information on stat priorities. At least this post gives me some what of a clearer idea now. Thank you.
Definitely check out icy veins for the best azerite traits and other important info. Prot is awesome don’t let people tell you it’s inferior. It can be punishing if you mess up your survival rotation, but you put out crazy damage for a tank and it’s a lot of fun to play.

Tooled around on the ptr for a bit. Only on the dungeoneers dummy, but wow is it a departure. There’s a clear separation between defense and offense and it feels great in both directions. I’ve been shelving my warrior waiting for the new design (to lesson the skill curve).
Shield block felt always available, IP was no longer disruptive. If high key warrior strats are just D up and destroy with damage (vs monk kiting and other high end tank strats), it’s going to be super fun.

It really needs to be exactly that. We lack all of the enemy movement utilities such as sigil of chains, gorefiend/death grip, typhoon etc. I love nothing more than thunder clapping huge packs in high keys but with Sanguine and casters it’s a bit of a **** show. I wish heroic throw would be on a 6s cooldown but have the ability to silence.
Agreed. I would happily even put pummel and heroic throw on the same CD if it meant a ranged silence. Or maybe do something like attaching a chain to your weapon so you can hit an enemy with heroic throw, then use it again to pull the enemy back to you, kind of like death grip but more warrior-like. That would be awesome.
