Starting fresh SOD characters with some friends, should i just buy the runes?

Some friends of mine wanted to try out Hardcore and convince me to join them. Seeing as I’m posting in SOD right now it went about as well as you would expect. Since we still have game time we decided to move over to SOD.

I played back in phase 1 and had a good time finding the runes and doing the quests, but i was most interested in Mage healing and Warlock tanking, neither of which were easy to get the runes for. So now that you can buy the runes right away my question is, is it worth it?

I mean is it worth it to buy the runes that allow me to spec as I want right away, or am I missing out on the experience of questing for those runes and earning them properly? Does getting access to higher level runes trivialize the leveling experience since i will have access to higher level spells right away?

On another note, is there a way to opt out of the global exp buff? I would like to be able to quest through a zone without out leveling it in the first handful of quests. The slower leveling of classic is much more appealing to me than the gogogo of retail and the xp buff completely destroys that.

yes buy all the runes from the vendor. have fun

entirely depends on how you want to play.

the specs dont feel complete without all/most of the runes
yes, it trivializes leveling content
you can turn the buff off at an inn keeper

IMO runes were kind of fun to find and acquire while playing, but acquiring all your runes these days is a bit of a chore due to volume of them to find, and also some of them were fairly in-depth to discover and complete the chain for. They didn’t age well if you ask me, and I think the fact they just put them on a vendor recognizes that.

If you find it fun to a guide to acquire them then have at it, but IMO that kind of takes away the main component of “discovering” the runes. If you go blind you’re likely to miss multiple runes while leveling.

If you do buy all the runes you will find the leveling experience to be much much easier than Classic. It’s not retail levels of easy, but I’ve been playing a Prot Pally and have multiple AoE abilities so I am mowing down 2-3 enemies at a time with minimal issues.

If you have any interest in checking out max level SOD content I would probably argue to leave the buff on and powerlevel your way to 60 to get in on the action ASAP. You can turn off the exp at any innkeeper, and I’d maybe do that on another round of characters.

I am seeing that low level dungeon content is somewhat sparse…not dead, just not loaded up like HC realms are. If you enjoy Classic leveling and just want to have fun with borked out characters with no concern about max level content then have at it I suppose.
