I noticed that most of the mobs are neutral in the Undead starting area.
This was a change that wasn’t brought in until WoTLK.
In Vanilla some were neutral, but some were also red and would attack you first.
Nope. All the enemies for the first few quests have always been neutral.
Half of the zombies were neutral, but the other half weren’t. Now they are all neutral.
If I remember correctly the mobs in that area were all neutral except for the spiders in that cave (which I don’t remember the name) were red.
Yeah I’ve been playing since vanilla and I never remember it not this way.
Your memories are mistaken
Rattlecage, wretched, and mindless, I specifically remember mindless zombies being red
if anyone has Joana’s speed run from 2006, we could have this question answered with proof instead of memories.
Off topic, but the unstuck / blink forward a few feet button is gone too It’s been replaced with the new “Teleport to graveyard” option from retail.
I thought I remembered the wolves and kobolds in Northshire being red, too. Don’t have any picture proof, however.
I found a clip on his channel. It shows the orc starting area that the Vile Familiars are aggressive in vanilla. I don’t know if his speed run was during 1.12 or not, but I assume the spiders in the cave in Deathknell would follow suit with these mobs. All other mobs in the starting area are neutral though.
Edit: Ok, he was on Jube’Thios on launch which was January 22nd, 2006. This would be right after patch 1.9 (AQ patch) So they were aggressive at this point in time. I cannot find patch notes where it was changed if it was.
Here is (blurry) footage of the “Rattling the Rattlecages” quest from 2007
The spiders and the crusaders were red. The rest were neutral.
At some point they made the 1-10 experience much easier. Obviously as an attempt to draw even more people in, then they can start the real game after they begin the second zones. Saying that of course it’s still possible to die to murlocs or bandits in Elwynn.
It makes sense really 1-10 being the tutorial.
This is why people complain so much about the challenge. Seems kind of silly expecting hard content in the starter zones.
I have noticed this too in the night elf starting area. I was pretty certain that level 3 mobs were neutral, but level 4 mobs used to be aggressive, like the grells and grelkin.
I used to make tons of night elves because I love the starter zone and I specifically remember this one level 4 grellkin on the way to the spider cave that used to be aggressive, and it’s now passive.
You know what… I was thinking the same thing last night. Weren’t these kobolds and wolves supposed to be aggressive and attack first?
I joined in BC though… but even then, I could have sworn that’s how it was.
BC launched in January of 2007. So that video could very well be from BC, not Vanilla.
From what I remember, once mobs were level 4 in the starter zones, they were aggressive. I definitely remember a mixture of passive and aggressive mobs, not just in the caves.
I thought the Rattlecages in the undead zone (lvl 3-4) were red…
Perhaps, but its highly unlikely they changed starter zone mobs to aggressive in BC that were otherwise passive in vanilla.
