Heya, so my brother’s got an eye to try out Classic - but RAF is on hiatus, and he can’t seem to use a standard starter edition account to play on classic…
This seems weird because I swear a couple days ago I was trying to invite a starter edition account into a guild (obviously unsuccessfully). So I figure it’s totally possible. Can anyone offer some insight on how exactly you get this working?
By starter edition do you mean free trial? You need active game time to play Classic.
I would’ve though so, if I hadn’t seen with my own eyes the error message for trying to invite a trial account to a guild. But I dunno maybe it was an oversight or I’m going crazy.
Their reasoning may have had to do with overloading the servers even more. I can’t see a reason not to allow players to play for free up to level 5 in the next few weeks. That’s enough to experience the gameplay difference and see if you are interested.
It probably said that guy was a starter account because he just paid for his sub and it had not fully processed yet.
My guess here is sometimes there is a lag between how the account is flagged and purchase times.
Someone subbed a starter account and it let them play Classic. Still flagged as a stsrted account and wouldn’t allow guild access.
Just a guess but a subscription is required for Classic.
Starter accounts won’t work with Classic. I already tried on the 1st day that Classic was released and I received an error message saying that an active sub was needed to play Classic.
I went ahead and renewed my sub just for Classic the very next day. I canceled it right before BFA launched and I’m never going to play BFA or any other expansions after BFA.
I’m not sure how long the lag is between paying for a sub and having your account moved from starter to subscriber, because it took me about 2 or 3 hours to make new names (in MS Notepad) for my alts first (I didn’t want to use my same names from retail).
Fair. Purchase lag makes sense, feel bad for the dude who was probably super confused that he was still flagged as a starter account the other day now

I hope at some point they do allow starter accounts to try Classic, even if it is only to Level 5.
I don’t have an active sub right now due to unexpected medical expenses so I am stuck playing retail starter for a while.
No offense, but I kinda hope they don’t. If I go to the starting area to try to recruit new guildies, I’d like to know they’ve committed to playing at least a little bit. I’m not saying you haven’t, but a lot of people who just use starter accounts to try things out haven’t.
Oh no offense taken at all. I totally understand where you are coming from. I have played retail for years, and this is the 1st time my sub has lapsed in I can’t remember when.
I just can’t pay for a sub right now and I don’t have enough gold for a token since they have gone up in price. I would rather play starter Classic than Retail. WOW has been my “Happy Place” I guess you could say, and I am missing it right now.
I hope Blizzard never does this. We already have gold spam despite requiring a sub to login. BFA already has free starter up to level 20.
No, I had a sub for Legion. I cancelled my sub to WoW right before BFA released and I went back to LoL. And then I quit LoL to resub for WoW Classic. Now that WoW Classic is out, I guess I’m never getting out of Bronze 4 in LoL.
