I KNOW THIS IS A PIPE DREAM. No need to waste your time saying “Blizz would never” because I already know that.
So one of my longest-standing issues with WoW has been that my favorite two roles are tank and ranged DPS, but only druid can do that and I’ve never been a big fan of druid. I’ve given up on the idea of classes getting fourth specs (though fingers crossed at a hero spec that lets people tank/support/heal in the distant future), so instead I have this idea:
Stand-alone specs.
What if, instead of getting tinker in the xpac after WW, we got 4 or 5 new specs that ANYONE could be simply from picking your tinker weapon if you so choose. Totally new character bar/abilities. No sharing from your base class, all because you picked up a particular tinker “weapon” (these wouldn’t be equipable, just for specs. Armor values would scale to whatever it should be, seeing as though it’s all homogenized these days anyway.
Ideas:
-Tank: Mechaneer. Hop in a mech suit and tank. Perhaps a 1h and shield for actual weapons.
-Ranged DPS: Artillerist. Pick up a mortar cannon and blast magical attacks through the cannon while using bows/guns in between rounds.
-Melee DPS: Duelist. Grab a gunblade attachment for your 1h weapon. 1h and held-in-offhand focused duelist with gadgets.
-Healer: Physician. Pick up a high-tech medkit. Douse your allies in experimental healing packs. Likely staff and caster weapons.
-Support (if it exists): War Support. Grab an elixir launcher attachment to shoot stims at allies and debuff enemies. Probs guns and bows here too.
Pipe dream, I know. But what do you guys think?
Would this be a welcome change so that you could be a mage but then help as a tank if your guild needed it? Or would you prefer something like hero talents modifying specs to have different play styles, like enhancement getting a tank hero talent setup? Or do you think, with warbands, there will be no need because we can easily make alts?

I think they would never do this and it probably is a good thing.
Lol dude posts 1 minute after post goes live and didn’t even read the first sentence.
This sounds messy and very akin to like how FF does class design.
I read the first sentence but you asked me what I thought later in your post so that’s what I thought.
remember? You can’t dictate to people what they think.
i need a turret based dps build where i annoyingly out turrets everywhere like heimerdinger from league.
If theyre making 4 tinker specs in this scenario, why not just have it as a class?

Blizzard can’t even fully develop the tanks they already have.

Just to give options for classes. Currently there’s only one class that can both ranged DPS and tank. With this, anybody would have those options.
Seems like a bad idea to give everyone an additional spec of your ideal class fantasy though.
Makes much more sense as one class for those who want it.
And those with no interest in the fantasy of tinker doesnt get it thrown on top of them.

The game does not need to be more complicated
True. But this has been the argument/complaint since DK was added. The argument back then was “why add three DK tank specs [because they all could tank at the time] when they can’t even balance or fix warrior, druid, and paladin tanks?”
I think, at the end of the day, adding DK, monk, DH, and evoker made the game more fun than not, despite endless balance issues.
I totally agree. In fact I kind of imagine these specs as more basic/streamlined because the game feels so bloated.
It would make sense lore-wise too, because these “gadgets” would need to be simple enough for anyone to pick up.
And it’s a rock solid argument. Instead of adding Monk tanks to the game, they should have actually fixed Druid tanks.
They STILL haven’t fixed Druid tanks.
Lol just me assuming
we will be due for another class after WW. We get a new one every other xpac.
I want a vulcan on my druid, flight form becomes a you-know-what.

Vulcan druids?
The Great Bird of the Galaxy!
And bear form would be a Sehlat, I assume.
Lol. Commercial goes “WoW: Mists of Pandaria. Experience the mist-shrouded Isle of the Pandaren with the newly fixed feral druid tank: the Panda!” Aaaaand watch the dollar signs fly.
