SSF without Hardcore?

Edit: I was able to character transfer with the SF buff once, but after about an hour I could not get any other transferred characters to get the SF buff, and the one transfer lost the SF buff. Seems there was either a delay or it was hotfixed!

Everything below is no longer relevant and realm transferring with the SF buff no longer seems possible.

I want to do SSF without hardcore and it seems possible! Here’s my findings:

  1. Self-Found can only be selected at character creation, and only on Hardcore realms (it’s a checkbox next to the name entry only visible on HC realms)
  2. Dying as HC SF gives a tarnished soul buff, no resurrection (can run back to body as ghost but res option is only “try again” and instant log-out), but the SF buff stays
  3. Character transferring the dead HC SF character from Skull Rock to Benediction was free and took about 20 minutes
  4. When I logged into Benediction, I had the SF buff, a Soul of Iron buff (which shouldn’t be there since I died once on HC), and a Tarnished Soul buff (from that HC death)
  5. I died again on Benediction and have 2 “Tarnished Soul” buffs now, no “Soul of Iron” buff, and the SF buff still
  6. Trying to trade with another player says “That action is currently restricted” implying the SF rules are still active after the realm transfer

Other testing:

  • Transferring a HC SF character from a HC realm to Classic-era realm with an existing character on that Classic-era realm with the same name forces the HC SF-transferred character to need a name change
  • Transferring a HC SF character from a HC realm to Classic-era realm with an existing character on that Classic-era realm with the same name and changing the name to something different resulted in having two “Soul of Iron” buffs and no SF buff
  • (testing transfer without rename in-case SF buff transfers by char name)
  • Transferring a HC SF character from a HC realm to Classic-era realm without ever having logged-in once on the HC realm results in no buffs transferred (you have to enter the world on the HC realm to get the buff(s) applied on that character)

TLDR: So far I’m doing testing with 2 characters and 4 different realms and have different results as to what buffs are transferred, one case transferring the SF and HC buffs, and the other only the HC buff. I suspect either the realms being transferred between, or the character name being the same or changing on the transfer being key factors.

  • HC = Hardcore mode (auto on HC realms)
  • SF = Self-found mode with “Self-Found Adventurer” buff (given with Self-Found mode)
  • Soul of Iron = Buff that reports no Hardcore deaths (start with it on HC realms)
  • Tarnished Soul = Buff that reports at least 1 death as Hardcore mode (any deaths as HC on any realm)

absolutely.

you can hop in any normal server and do SSF. it will not be official though.

What’s stopping you? If you want to play SSF without Hardcore, just spin up a character and go wild. It might be helpful to name your character something descriptive or make a guild with an appropriate name to communicate your intentions to others. The only reason here is because mob tagging is not shared in this version of the game and SSF can often introduce challenges in quest content.

If you need help with this but don’t want to violate the terms of SSF, I can assist you with making the guild so you don’t actually have to receive the money to register a charter, you’d just have to do it on the Mankrik cluster, likely on Alliance side.

There’s no actual SSF server yet (hardcore or otherwise). When it comes to hardcore you’d be able to transfer the same as any other dead hardcore character, but if you’re not playing hardcore you wouldn’t need to transfer. You can make it anywhere.

Are you asking about the buff/flag your character gets in HC for electing to play Self Found (SF)?

It’s not Solo Self Found (SSF) that has been recognized by Blizzard in HC. They are two different rulesets. If you are asking about the SF designation on your character remaining when you transfer I’m not certain but I would guess it would if the character had not died in HC.

I’m doing testing now and reported findings in the first post, but it does seem like the Self-found buff transfers between realms

Edit: Maybe there was delay or it was hotfixed, but I no longer have the SF buff on the transferred character where it worked

Whoa.
If that’s the case good job, Blizzard.

The Soul of Iron drops from transferred HC players - be they dead or alive.

I didn’t lose the Soul of Iron buff on transfers and even had two of those same buffs on the last 2 transfers, but this might be hotfixed by now.

They only disappear after some time, not immediately. I lost it on all of my transferred characters. No set time as far as I could detect, only “later”
