So I bought and installed a new Western Digital (Blue) 1TB SATA SSD for a 100 bucks and boy does it make a huge difference in playing WOW.
I would have never known about it, if it wasn’t for the minimum requirement gaff a while back that Blizzard posted for Shadow Lands.
Anyways, thought I would share

I have the same drive. Works great.

Just wanna chip in that an External SSD also works extremely well, although slower than an internally installed one but yeah.

Having a SSD is probably the biggest upgrade you can get for a PC nowadays. One of them is mandatory if you want to play Total Warhammer 2 because the HDD load times are just horrendous.

That is good to know. I was thinking of purchasing that game.
Rest assured you can now that you have a SSD. With a HDD it would take upwards of a minute to load in and out of a battle and you do a lot of fighting in Total Warhammer.

Well, depends on how you connect it.
USB 2.0 and it’s slower than an HDD
USB 3.0 and it’s almost as fast as SATA III
USB C and data transfer rate is faster then the SSD read/write rate so you’re equal to SATA III

Yeah I made a thread like 2 weeks ago testing it loading dalaran compared to my laptop, shaved off something like a full minute going from the internal HDD 7200RPM to the external SSD via USB-C.

Recently built a new computer and this is mybfirst one with a nvme m.2 drive. I am blown away at how fast it loads wow into a major city.
I tossed in a Samsung Evo and you are completely correct. It makes a HUGE difference in load times and rendering. Was easy to install for a noob like me too.

I have a 512 gb Nvme ssd. Really want to upgrade to a 1 TB, but have no clue on how to transfer data, os, etc from my current nvme pcie to to a new NVme.

if it’s wow you can just copy the folder and then let the bnet client search it for you (or manually select the new location), the same is true for steam games.
if it’s the OS then it’s gonna take you a while to research, takes a lot of steps. mind you you don’t have to do it, most motherboards support multiple HDDs so you can keep the OS in that one and put everything else in the largest one

Yeah this mobo only has one slot for ssd unfortunately. Prebuilt system. Was so easy when I upgraded my girlfriends old 7200 rpm spin hd to a 2.5 ssd drive for her pc a couple years ago. Just used Apricorn software, and hooked ssd to the included sata cable, then connected to a usb port on pc, and in a couple minutes done. Nvme pcie is a lot different.
.
I come in all these threads to emphasize to people who may not believe, going from HDD to SSD will be a substantial upgrade. Even if you get some bottom of the barrel dirt SSD (don’t) it will still be spectacular performance compared to a traditional hard drive.

You don’t really see that big of a difference with SATA SSD. You should go for nvme imo.
Good for you, it’s a great investment.
Disagree. The difference in performance between NVME and Sata SSD isn’t as stark as the jump from an HDD to SSD.

I have an internal baby sized SSD that I need to move things off and just let it run WoW, D3, and Windows.
Takes about 10 seconds to load into Boralus with my HDD; would I see faster times with a SSD? I might upgrade but honestly the 10 seconds doesn’t bother me too much
