A male dev working on Kingdom Heart’s 3 who was sexually harrassed by a female coworker got fired instead of her. Hope you guys all feel great while you flock to Final Fantasy 14.
But just know that Blizzard is hardly the only company that has issues. Most of you will ignore this video or not care about the story either because it wasn’t as popular as the blizzard incident, whatever the reason. Many of you will also ignore this video and story because it doesn’t fit your narrative.
The point is, you can cancel your subs all you want and go to FF14, but square enix is just as crappy and not innocent when it comes to sexual harrassment at work. Males can be victims too.
Everyone is able to choose when they end their sub and for what reason. Those who feel the need to end it due to the allegations are free to do so, just as anyone who wants to stay has every right to.
For me at least, the allegations are just the final straw on top of a large pile of other grievances with the game, and I can’t imagine I’m the only one thinking like that.
The issues at Blizzard are industry wide, this is very true. And I hope it gets rooted out and destroyed wherever it rears its ugly head. Abuse is unacceptable in every situation, and I sincerely hope that employee was able to land on his feet somewhere, as awful as the situation likely was for him.
That said, I don’t think you needed to go after those cancelling for the allegations at Blizzard. You could have worded your OP to be more of a generalization about the rampant industry wide issue rather than directly call out those who are leaving WoW to go to FF14. I don’t think we need more fire to fuel any defensive behaviors here.
Sexual harrassment is bad no matter who the victim is. I know that the industry itself is rife with this. I have seen too many articles to think otherwise.
Very true. The whole video game industry is rife with sexual harrassment and misogyny. So why just go after blizzard with pitchforks, why not stop playing all video games? What I am trying to say is how does someone go about picking and choosing which company to support and which not to support? For every story we hear about sexual harrassment, there are hundreds that we haven’t heard about. People are talking about FF14 as the better alternative and going there but Square Enix has also had the same problems so I don’t understand the rationale I guess.
perhaps. it’s probably the perfect storm because wow players are so upset with the state of the game and being ignored by Blizzard that when this story broke, it was an opportunity for an outlet for anger. The story itself is horrible enough, but the previous factors probably created a more hostile environment from the player base towards blizzard.
Sadly it was the correct decision, if they fired her the wokey wokey would be all over it dragging Square Enix through the mud. When something happens to men the wokey don’t care, trust me.
Keep in mind that, while it might not logically make sense, World of Warcraft has been home for these players for a very long time. Final Fantasy 14 feels like something completely disconnected; to many, it’s just a new game to try. At least that’s how I see it compared to WoW, and that’s simply because I’ve called Azeroth home for over half of my life. So the idea of something like this happening within a place you call home is a lot more painful and difficult to disconnect from.
And yes, that sounds awful. And it is. But no one said people always operate logically when it comes to morals and emotions.
Google hmwsgx twitter, she has a post about the FFXIV dev environment being toxic to women. People want to vote with their wallets and don’t have a lot of options. Seems all the good games have tainted corporate cultures.
Japanese companies are the worst for treatment of women. From lower pay, sexual harassment, glass ceilings and everything else being addressed and corrected in America and other countries, Japan has always been a horrible place for women to work.
So are there stories of male abusers of females being fired in Japan? I don’t think so unless it was some criminal incident.
It has nothing to do with what that “current thing” is. it’s because our society is built on the foundation that it can’t happen to men and men are weak if it does happen. They just need to suck it up and be a man about it.
It’s not a new thing at all. It’s the baseline on how male victims are treated.
