Spooky-ooky Quests of Azeroth

the plaguelands dungeons and the plaguelands in general were actually some really horrific sh*t back in the day. imagining the terror of joseph redpath as marduk bears down on him, or the insanity which struck stratholm still gives me the creeps. even the backstory for timmy the cruel was kinda messed up lol

I am Arachnophobic and the thing keeping me from freaking out was noticing that Xishirra was not going to fight me(my heart would have leapt if that happened just as it did with Maexxna) due to having already read the Quests on WoWhead ahead of time(even if not all the details).

Did you do that one where you went into the caves of Azj-Kahet looking for someone and discovered this nightmarish spider so powerful all you could do was flee after it melted the guy you were with to his bones? Scared the crap out of me.

Yeah, thatā€™s the very same that weā€™re discussing! Itā€™s horrible!

Yeah I saw when I scrolled up. Glad Iā€™m not the only one who found it horrifying.

Note to self, avoid said quest. I do not need anymore nightmare fuel while in Azj-Kahet :dracthyr_heart:

Itā€™s a good call. The game almost treats it like some Shelob-esque horror remnant from another age the Nerubians are cool to just avoid and leave in its hole.

Yeah, itā€™s gotta be pretty bad if the literal insect people are like:

ā€œUhhā€¦ letā€™s just chuck stuff to eat down there every so often so it staysā€¦ down there.ā€

Nothing much scares us. Weā€™ve faced down the Black Empire and walked away unscathed. By that THING down there? That thing scares us :dracthyr_nod:

I am of the opinion that outside of some rare examples, Blizzard got worse at writing spooky content post WotLK. Undead were scary for a time, until they decided we needed to DBZ powerscale this up. Now nothing is scary.

Weā€™re fighting the void, which mind controls, and it isnā€™t scary.

Anyone 'member the Upside Down Sinners?

Yeah, I definitely agree. WoW in general is not really what Iā€™d consider scary, but thereā€™s definitely some spooky lore in itā€™s annals that gets the imagination going.

I think original Scourge lore had a certain essence to it that made it genuinely unsettling. Particularly stuff like body horror when it came to abominations and necromancy. Most (if not all) of my favorite ā€˜darkā€™ themes come from Classic, with a bit of a smattering in BfA with Drustvar and Nazmir, and the one awful spider quest in Azj-Kahet weā€™ve been sharing collective dread about, which honestly isnā€™t very much by comparison of what we got in Classic into WotLK.

Despite lots of cool visuals, Shadowlands was woefully lacking on what I thought would be creepy content.

Maldraxxus was legitimately creepy as the whole place was hinted at being an actual living thing. Since you could skin the tumors found all over if you had skinning. Tumors only grow on living creatures

Plus the soul storm was creepy to witness. But than again, itā€™s my favorite zone, so I might be a bit biased there :dracthyr_nod:

Yeah, Maldraxxus as a concept was neat. I wish they had touched on it being a ā€˜thingā€™ a bit more 'cause I thought that was fun worldbuilding. Although, any creepiness was dispelled by how (perhaps unintentionally) adorable every single one of the Necrolord characters were. The Kyrian fleshshaping from their campaign was kinda twisted though!

I know SL overall isnā€™t that great. But the Necrolords have some of the best characters in WoW.

Iā€™ll fight anyone who disses my boy Merelith. And I love my little psycho abomination that is Emeni :dracthyr_heart:

Just hearing My apprentice! always makes me smile when I go and visit

Tbh.

Denathrius saying ā€œI am Revendrethā€ was a nod to Strahd with Barovia. ā€œI am the land!ā€
But they didnā€™t know why Strahd said it.

Strahd was a Dark Lord of a Domain of Dread. It was created for him, of him by the dark powers. Strahd literally was the land.

I thought that with Denathrius having said it, we would learn that it was literally true with the Primus.

Alas, it was not to be.

Zereth Mortis births Afterlives and the ā€œRobotsā€ it makes have literal meat in themā€¦ The Afterlives are Animals pumped out by Zereth Mortis.

The Machine of Death is a farce: Itā€™s a GMO disguised as a Machine! The Devourers that ate Automa Animaā€™s Mutations arenā€™t their bodies rotting but them attaining the same Mutation(which causes the Bodies to segment) as the Automa!
