Several times its mentioned Uther has some form of connection to the Maw.
While doing the Kyrian covenant quest on the beta, I noticed Uther said this:
So I’m wondering, did the Arbiter originally assign Arthas to an afterlife other than the Maw? Maybe Revendreth, Maldraxxus, or even Bastion, depending on if acts committed while your soul is stolen count? Did Uther then work with Devos to subvert the Arbiter’s will and get Arthas thrown into the Maw?
Acts committed by the now sentient body while the Soul is stolen by a Runeblade it seems don’t count.
The Body having gained sentience unfortunately has nothing to punish outside the Memory of Arthas and we all know the Kyrian never took him to the Arbiter…
His actions before losing his Soul to the Runeblade are:
Purging a city to prevent a Zombie Apocalypse,
Backstabbing his mercenaries that he hired to burn the ships in order to keep his soldiers with him to fight the Scourge threat and…
Declaring both his revenge and his people as being more important than his Soldiers who clearly don’t care about the Scourge threat to the Eastern Kingdoms.
The backstabbing of his mercenaries was the worst of his crimes and driven by Uther convincing the King to not only deny Arthas backup but recall the men(and having the messenger make it clear he was the one who convinced the King) whom Arthas needed to fight the Scourge.
The Purge of Stratholme(a necessary measure considering the incurability of the Plague of Undeath) made on impulse due to the recent trauma he went through on top of the other things he forced himself to do before grabbing the Runeblade should have been traumatizing enough for the Arbiter to deem him needing to be sent to Bastion where Souls broken by Trauma yet filled with Dedication to Duty go.
That’d be an absurd place to send him, to be frank.
It’s probably more that the Kyrians picked him up (since that’s what Kyrians do) and then Uther decided to send him to a different afterlife than he was meant to.
It sounds more like Arthas, not his lich king incarnation, but Arthas the Prince, was destined for Maldraxxus, but something went wrong and Uther found a way around the Arbiters will to send him to the Maw
Where are you getting Maldraxxus if the only mention of Arthas is Uther who is in Bastion and the quest-text talks about Uther being “denied” by the Archon and Devos helping Uther
Uther says he was denied his vengeance, it doesn’t mention Arthas was bound for Bastion. Unless I’m missing something and they didn’t post the whole quote. Maybe Uther felt that anything less than the Maw was too good for Arthas, considering everything he done to his own people.
Yeah but you can only be denied justice by someone who has power over you and the other person
So it’s either
Archon said they couldn’t just toss him into the Maw regardless of what Arthas did
Uther/Devos tried to tell the Archon that Arthas was unworthy of being a Kyrian and she insisted he deserves a chance like anybody else to pass the trials
It may very well meant that Uther wanted what he considered to be justice… the utter destruction of Arthas’ soul and having Arthas sent to the Maw denied him that.
Perhaps what Uther wants is access to the Maw so that he could go down and hunt Arthas personally.
I’d be curious to know where Arthas’ soul was supposed to go, honestly.
The two options that seem most plausible are Revendreth and Bastion. Revendreth is pretty self-explanatory, I think. Bastion, though? Well, he was dedicated to his duty as crown prince as well as a Paladin. Likewise I imagine all the things he did as the Lich King/Death Knight were fairly traumatic, so a fresh start might be pretty damn appealing to him.
Being a prisoner inside a Runeblade with one sliver of you being a prisoner inside your own body while said body becomes a sentient Sociopath who casually brings down entire Kingdoms would be traumatic!
Add having to purge a city because it was the only option available to him on top of being forced to kill his own mercenaries because the overly cautious idealists wanted him returned home rather than aid him against the threat to their Kingdom and his trauma is even worse!
Bastion would be the best place for someone as broken as Arthas!
The Souls of Kael’thas, Kel’Thuzad and Sylvanas committed crimes while still controlling their Bodies rather than the Bodies controlling themselves like in Arthas’s case so they’d best fit Revendreth.
In Sylvanas’ case, we know she went to the Maw, we saw it in the Edge of Night short story, and her entire motivation since then has been to avoid going back there.
I find this implication interesting cause it goes with Uthers wc3 line “I hope there’s a special place in hell waiting for you Arthas.” So I can totally understand it, plus it seems like Uther gets manipulated by Devos since other text include “what we did to him was not justice, it was vengeance.”
Honestly does my heart good that Arthas wasn’t actually meant for the maw but was sent there unjustly.
You know about this. The more i think about it, I highly doubt Sylvanas went to the was judged to go to the Maw.
Doesn’t seem to make much sense in the context of the new lore being made. I’m assuming she was pulled there purposefully to kickstart this mess.
Of course time does work differently in the Shadowlands so its possible she was in fact judged to go to the Maw based on the crap she would eventually do while in league with the Jailer, in which case it would be a Dragon Aspect type deal where the powers at be self sabotage themselves by creating their own villain.
Not really, those going to the maw are usually a danger to the shadowlands as a whole. Arthas was a man who tried his best to save his people, but many horrific events and the manipulation of beings who eat and breath manipulation ie the dreadlords was a losing battle for Arthas.
