So after the expansion, after the last raid, what’s different than it was at the start.
Xal was our enemy and had an artifact of immense power, now she is our enemy and has an artifact of more immenser powerer.
No real new allies, no real new enemies, I guess in a way we’re worse off with death and injuries.
I have to wonder was this the plan, or did they realize partway into TWW that the story wasn’t landing and decide to return everything to status quo and start over in midnight?
war within was a year into development before chris metzen came back and said “ya know what, lets do a saga.” so much of war within feels discombobulated
People keep saying this and uh, either they didn’t pay attention or are really trying to make their repeated sentence work.
JUST on Xal’atath and the Darkheart alone it’s now super charged with Dalaran’s magic and a void lord. This is ignoring every story beyond Xal’atath herself.
We didn’t gain allies in the Earthen, Nerubians, Arathi?
We convinced the Earthen that the Titans were actually kinda evil all along somehow and “freed” them from a life of purpose by turning them all into unbound, because the writing team decided to retcon the Titans into opportunistic manipulators.
We killed the rebellious Spider Queen, the void addled Earthen traitors, and found the Empire of Man Half-elves.
We also witnessed Gallywix off himself in a bout of stupidity and liberated Undermine, even if that side plot did not make much sense in the timeline, as it was clearly shoehorned in for the horde to have some presence.
No idea yet about the aftermath of the Ethereals, but it shouldn’t be impactful.
Against Knaifu though? She got stronger for the next expansion.
Edit: We also saw the Light return to Anduin (who has been strangely absent after .0 for some unknown reason), Dadgar get crippled, cheered for Maeryn Suethar as she left the underground Arathi and helped the Kirin Tor mages, which stupidly decide not to rebuild Dalaran, the best city this game ever had.
All in all, when it comes to the overall plot, nothing actually meaningful happened. We could have skipped directly to Midnight on that front, but TWW will alter the details.
Plotwise, a pretty meh expansion, in hindsight.
We should have explored more of that Undersea, Beledar and kept the “war within” theme.
There was zero Horde representation in that whole patch. Gazlowe was not acting on behalf of the Horde, was not representing Horde interests, or even acknowledged the Horde existed.
I don’t like whatever they’re doing, I can’t put my finger on it. It feels like a Fast and the Furious or James Bond plot or something where the movie keeps trying to subvert who the villain and what the goal is.
It’s like a James Bond movie but minus anything cool or stylish or witty, at least it has something sexy though, those toes.
