Splitting Ice

Thoughts on making this more of a ‘havoc’ type spell where we get to choose who the split goes to?

Having to micro-manage that… no thanks, that’s part of why I don’t play destro.

The only problem with splitting ice is breaking cc and attacks targets that are not in combat.

Yeah that sounds like it’d be super clunky to manage.

Maybe if the havoc spell was off the global it wouldn’t be too bad, then at least it wouldn’t mess up your rotation by eating globals. But even then it’d be more trouble than it’s worth IMO.

How would it be clunky to manage? In fights where there stuff like balls on painsmith you just cast the cleave spell on the boss and your second ice lance always goes there.

How would it not?

It would add an additional spell you’d have to press before you get into your damage rotation, or that’d you have to fit in the middle of your rotation, depending on the situation. Like I said off the global it wouldn’t be too bad. But even with that I just don’t see how it’d be worth it. The majority of the time your lance simply hitting the nearest target is totally fine, in those cases it’s just an extra thing you have to press for no reason.

Lots of extra button presses for a small gain in niche situations. Seems like it’d be a net negative to me.

Maybe if it was like an option. You could press this havoc-like button to choose your second target, or if you don’t it will just work like it does now and auto pick the nearest target. That would be fine. If it was required to use for splitting ice to function tho, that’d be a downgrade to the spec IMO.

Making the cleave off-gcd toggleable would be a much cleaner way to fix it’s issues.

I have to echo what the others are saying. I play Destro and having to micromanage Havoc is clunky af and not fun at all. What should happen is to have it not hit targets that the mage is not in combat with or are CCed but even though it’s a common sense QoL change it will never happen because Blizzard can’t figure out how to code it into the game.

On a side note Comet Storm should be a baseline spell instead of sharing that row with Splitting Ice because virtually all fights that have the kind of cleave which makes SI shine also have priority targets that need bursting down for which Frost continues to have no answer.

I don’t like splitting ice because it often pulls things I don’t want, similar to ignite. It would be one thing if zones were bigger and there was less mob density, but as a spec that’s supposed to kite things around things that grab random trash and critters sucks. Why are woodland creatures so strong?

So spec out of it into freezing rain and get insta cast blizzard during frozen orb when you’re out in the open world
