Spellsword class?

What do you think is the closest thing to a spellsword in this game?

Enhancement Shaman.

enhancement shaman or death knight

Ret paladin is probably closest. Especially if you have that High Scholar’s outfit from the trading post a year or two ago.

Really hit that Kirin Tor Spellsword look. The belt from that set is really good, puts a spell tome on your hip.

There’s a few Kirin Tor/Dalaran themed 2h swords and maces, too. And a shield or two if you’re feeling up for a cheeky bit of tanking.

We deserve a spellblade class.

Mechanically speaking- hoq do they work? Do you just want a melee mage?

Would “Spellbreaker” from wc3 count?

The correct answer is DK or enhance shaman, Ret paladin has slowly become a ranged class, give them more casts than searing gleam and they’re just a holy caster

That would be the tanking spec.

I can’t place this outfit.

Spell blades would function differently then say a mage.

I would say they can lean more to runic incantations then a mage would. There is also some themes that mages don’t cover with the arcane. The mechanics should have us building a few arcane rune bars to unleash an arcane effect based on the spec you choose. (Think builder skills charging arcane magic into the runes on say the shield)

Spellbreaker would obviously be a sword and shield tank focusing on anti magic tanking, as well as having say some time/illusion magic to supplement it. (Thematically) (Melee of course)

There should be a cosmic dps spec that focuses on the universal themes of arcane magic (think constellations/algalon) (melee)

The third DPS spec should focus on the classic mage themes mixed with weapon use say like mixing magic types like khadgar did in WoD (frost fire embued into your weapon swing would be cool, or arcane lightning that we do not see in mages) (saying infusing arcane magic with your weapon/sword beams, teleporting around and the works, but still melee focused)

Spell blades can cover melee things we do not have as of yet.

Mail tank

Sword/board melee DPS

Melee arcane user

Spell blades would be either Plate or Cloth.

Our fourth Mail slot belongs to Tinker.

Death Knight.
If Shamans could use swords I’d add them, but they can’t. Now if we were talking about a Spellhammer…

How would a spellblade function differently than say enhancement shaman or dk in a meaningful way? Is it just enhancement shaman but arcane flavored?

They already focus on melee but have elemental spells that are instant as well as normal spells that they can make instant cast. During melee they are tossing out chain lightnings, flames, and other spells to blast enemies.

How would the spell blade be functionally different? They may not have wolves and it may be arcane damage, but you’d have to come up with something that plays very differently.

That sounds like a problem for Blizzard to solve, not us.

A triple recolor of a Spellblade Transmog, with an aresenal of spellblade aesthetic weaponry would probrably be best to ask for now than a whole class. Just like Necromancer transmog set is needed. And “Tinker”, especially because after the UM patch, gnomes (mecha too) are in need of allot more gnomish aesthetic armor and cosmetics. Also greatly expanding on the available tameable mechanical pets in game would go a long way towards scratching the Tinker class itch as well as an Engineering profession customizable mech mount

And we don’t have them, so I don’t think it’s something that they are going to do.

Someone should at least be able to articulate their vision for something (they haven’t responded yet, so maybe they can) and not just say “I want X, now it’s blizzard’s problem”. Your ask just might be unreasonable.

This is why I like you.

Tinker class FTW.

Spellsword axe

They lore wise cannot be in plate, they need mobility to properly use arcane magic.

They are also front line fighters, it would not make sense to be wearing cloth. Mail is the perfect middle ground. Aside from leather, and we already got 3 leather tanks.

I would argue how is evokers different enough from mages other then being mid-ranged in the same way, but they made them work.

But some things I can think of right away are these:

They can make them mechanically different then DK’s by making an arcane charge type system, say lore wise the spell blades shield has arcane runes, arcane magic tends to need to be charged to use, to do that, residue arcane energy they use from their builder skills can charge them. The runes then can be used as mini-cool-downs for either defense, utility, or offense. Very little is done gameplay wise with arcane rune magic which had been mentioned in wrath/WoD.

What I mean by “charging runes btw) is having a few meters (maybe 3 or less) that is charged based on actions taken. (Like stopping or “breaking” a spell for spell breakers)

There is also covering themes that is not covered with mages. Arcane lighting, more time magic usage, cosmic magic (like constallations) and more.

The spell breaker spec would specialize in “spell breaking” and not need barriers DK’s specialty) to do that. This could be simply done by spell damage reduction, stealing magic from the spell to charge runes, or negating magic effects to them via CD’s.

I am sure there is more that can be done with spell blades. There is allot they can take from other sources of media like for example DND pathfinder magus class.

There is more to arcane then just elemental attacks. I would also argue spell blades would take pride in their martial powers, be less likely support to their group then a shaman would, and won’t ask the elementals to assist them.

Time magic, teleportation via arcane magic. Spell breaking, cosmic magic, rune magic (that needs more lore for anyways) and many more. There is so much that can be done with arcane magic that the imagination is the limit.

Never say never. The door is never closed to them.

I agree. I wish we could kind of have like a mage/warlock hybrid. I would want destruction warlock stuff for a Hexblade feelings like from D&D, I think Arcane would fit really well for stuff in universe like Spellbreakers and the Nightborne spellsword guys and then either frost or affliction for the 3rd spec or maybe a new spec entirely.

Either way this would fill in a gap for class fantasy really well considering both D&D (Bladesinger and Hexblade) and PF2E (Magus) have them.
