Spellblade Class

I’d call that a stretch, but everything is speculation at this point.

It’s been a while since we’ve had a dragon expansion. We’ve had BC 2, we’re about to have WOTLK 2, we had MoP 2 with BFA, Catacylsm 2 seems like it ought to be on schedule.

I want to see the spellbreaker archetype made into a class that covers several of the iconic warcraft 3 units we dont currently have the option of imitating.

Spellbreakers were blood elf units using a tower shield and a throwing glaive.
Night elf huntresses were mounted, used a shield, and a throwing glaive.

Somehow, if those two could be turned into something representing a new class, I’d be all for it. A glaive+shield class would be awesome, especially if it was able to somehow be a primarily ranged or mid-ranged fighter by replacing the typical melee autoattack with a ranged throwing autoattack. It’d also mean demon hunters not being the only class able to use that weapon type anymore.

Abilities from both source units could be used. Give them things like spellshield and mana burn reminiscent of the spellbreakers, and things like a sentinel pet and ricocheting glaive attacks reminiscent of the huntresses. Wouldnt say no to mounted combat either, but that’s unlikely unless it’s a perk of one of the specializations.

The best you can hope for is a reskin of the other classes, another melee class is almost assuredly off the table.

As long as they aren’t another elf only class, I’d be down

It certainly sounds stylish. Shield and glaive style. See more mileage out of glaives than just DHs. Elves are also super popular.

I’m not sure though.

except what I just suggested was a ranged class.

Then it’s not a proper spellbreaker.

Spellbreakers in warcraft 3 were not melee units. They were midranged and had a ranged, throwing autoattack. The Huntresses I referenced, as well, were midranged units.

Dunno where you’re getting your spellbreaker info from.

Now that sounds interesting. I’ve visualizing something like a Red Mage in that case. A ranged DPS class that has some close up moves, kind of like the old-school style of Hunter before it became 100%.

I’d say more like a classic witchhunter - anti-magic abilities paired with ranged attacks.

I dunno if you’ve seen the FFXIV interpretation of Red Mages, they’re a ranged DPS but they’ve got some moves where they get into melee, do a melee flourish, and then disengage back. I think moves like “blink strike” could be interesting, especially if you couple them with a mechanic where you get dodge charges when you blink strike so it’s “safe” for a ranged character to pull off. Doing a few glaive combos, build up arcane charges, then unload them with a powerful blink strike, unload at close range, and then blink back. I think it could be very dynamic and fun. It’d fit the elven aesthetic pretty well. I guess you could say it tramples on the DH identity a bit with the flipping back and forth and the throwing the glaive but it sounds cool.

Certainly more appealing than Tinker, lol.

One possibility which would reduce the required work to implement (though at the cost of variety/scope) would be to add a fourth Spellbreaker/Battlemage spec to mages.
