This is a legal battle in joke that i am having with a friend. though serious in the fact that it is not working as described. For reference the ability states “Raise your shield. Reflecting the first spell cast on you, and reduce the magic damage you take by 25% for 5 sec.” Now as an example in brakenhide hollows there is a mob called stink breath. this mob casts and ability called stinky breath which is a cone ability that targets and individual. As such my argument is that, if stinky breath targets me and i use spell reflection it should revert the spell back at stink breath per its description. My friends argument is that though the spell targets you, it is hitting a radius of players whom may or may not be in the cone. this is not true to spell reflection though in that it redirects the first spell cast on you while its active. For stink breaths attack to follow this it would have to instead target a direction and not a player but it targets a player and as such should be redirected back to stink breath.
Plenty of things target a player but execute an area attack, and Spell Reflect is selective by design - it’d be cute if it worked on every spell in the game, but it would also be horribly broken.
I thank you for the sincere reply, and i understand not everything should be reflected. The matter though is even though spell reflect is selective by design the parts its ment to select refer to targeted spells. That includes spells that result in aoe since there is a difference is aoe spells. i refer you to the nokhud offensive boss raging tempest. It has an actual aoe that doesnt target a player in use it just goes off. this can not be spell reflected as it is not actually targeting anyone. Like i said there are spells even under the aoe formula they have that target a player when being used. This being the case per spell reflects usage it must without regard to a flawed design recognition, reflect the spell back at the caster.
Yeah I am still shocked that spell reflection can reflect the dot from the fourth boss in Ulduman.
But as we all know, the only thing Blizzard is consistent at is being inconsistent.
You don’t even need to have a shield equipped to use SR. Fury warriors raise their weapons to reflect. Come on Blizz, fix your tooltips!
The Arms/Fury version does say “raise your weapon…”
I’ve tried the uldaman one but maybe im using it at the wrong time ill try it again but that doesnt make sense as you said since it is an aoe that hits everyone and is not a targeted ability.
Use it just before the frontal tank clap goes off.
You can spell reflect all sort of stuff, but it’s usually individually targeted things (gnomer slimes were a very weird exception, and supports your argument lol).
For 2 bosses:l in particular:
In NO you can spell reflect the wind burst that the storm boss does when you move out of melee range. It’s a huge dps gain to weave in and out to force him to cast exactly one wind burst AND reflect it during the fight. Several million extra damage for doing it correctly. Interestingly enough, he will never cast wind burst if you’re in melee range, so this isn’t intuitive. On the last boss, you can spell reflect conductive strike, the dot he applies after the add phase. It’s like 80-100k a tick in extra damage (and saves you that damage to boot).
In halls of infusion, you can spell reflect squall buffet on the last boss for huge damage and ignore the knock back on it. Then use a defensive for the tank buster channel, and impending victory after 2-3 ticks to almost completely negate the tank buster of the encounter. BDK can AMS/death’s advance pretty much the entire tank buster sequence too.
I wish it was a bigger part of our offensive kit. I love spell reflect. I don’t get to use it as often as I’d like for damage though, would love to see more skill expression from proper use and dungeon knowledge in future xpacs.
We used to be able to reflect shaman’s thunder storm.
What makes you think this is magic? He’s just got bad breath
lol he might just have stinky breath. SR doesnt say magic it says targeted spell, technically thats any ability that would target you unless theres another definition for something targeting you that doesnt claddify as a spell. From how i look at it anything that requires a cast to use is a spell.
You can spell reflect dragonstrike in AV on the last boss, which is weird. It doesn’t reflect the dot back onto the boss either, it just negates the attack. I can’t think of something else that functions that way off the top of my head.
Spell reflect seems like something they go in and manually edit for how it interacts with stuff the more I think about it.
There are quite a lot of spells (especially in raid content) that are only deflected instead of reflected.
Much like Dark Simulacrum, there was a time where Spell Reflect worked on virtually everything, but it was beyond broken, leading to its removal. It simply cannot work without a lot of manual editing to ensure it doesn’t lead to completely broken interactions, but that’s also why the new version reduces magic damage taken as a consolation prize.
