Why are destruction warlocks the only class that have lockouts on every spell when chaosbolt gets interrupted?? Shadowflame spell should be it’s own and seperate from fire and seperate from shadow and not a combination of both!
When destruction gets interrupt, you can’t even use your defensive abilities, except unending resolve; no drain life, no fear, no darkfury, no mortal coil, no demonic circle …just standing there taking punches to the face.
There are a few other classes that can get locked out of multiple schools, so saying Destro Lock is the only one isn’t fair. Ele Shaman can get locked out of their entire kit if Elemental Blast gets interrupted and Ele/Resto Shaman are pretty useless outside of their nature school. There are also quite a few specs/classes that don’t have other schools available to them, meaning if any one of their spells get interrupted, they can’t do anything at all either. Havoc Demon Hunters are in a similar boat where if Eye Beam gets interrupted (and it commonly is in PvP) it locks DH out of almost every ability they have.
Anyways, the answer is because Chaos Bolt does Chromatic damage, meaning it can’t be absorbed or mitigated by resistances. This is mostly useful in PvP these days to avoid the 1-2% damage loss by racial passives. It was more meaningful when there were Arcane/Frost/Fire/Shadow Ward spells and Chaos Bolt did actual Chaos Damage meaning that you could damage DKs through AMS, although the damage was reduced since it became physical and was mitigated by armor. Chaos Bolt doing chromatic damage is still useful as every once in a while you’ll find an NPC who can resist Fire or Shadow or something.

Affliction shadow lock and Demo Shadowflame lock want to have words with you.
Arcane mages getting locked on arcane can’t blink, poly, or silence, though they can ice block and, extremely importantly, cast fire blast.
I’m ok with the lockouts, I just wish that some variation of resistance would make an appearance again to add a little more of an impact from multi school spells.
For pvp, perhaps allowing pvp gear to have a enchantable bonus stat added to it, via your choice of resistance, say 10 for a main school, and 5/5 for multi school.
Weapons could perhaps have the spell pen tacked on via enchants that you would normally use, having some pell pen added to the enchant.
For pve I would just say give some bosses a weakness to some elements, maybe not add resistances to them, but just the damage taken increase from X school of magic, perhaps enough so that altering your rotation to fully benefit from this to mix things up boss to boss.
But this is just wishful thinking, and I’m sure it would be difficult to pull this off properly.
