Spell damage gear not working

My shadow spell damage increasing gear is not affecting my shadow wand’s damage - like the character panel suggests - nor does it seem to be affecting my Mind Blast (and possibly other spells). With a sample of 61 wand hits, I get:
Min: 38
Avg: 54
Max 71

Character is a level 29 Dwarf Priest.

Gear:
Cursed Eye of Paleth (damage done by shadow spells and effects by up to 10)
Shimmering Rob of Shadow Wrath (+14 Shadow Spell Damage)
Gravestone Scepter 30-57 Shadow Damage, 29.0 dps, speed 1.5

Values displayed in character panel’s ranged section (w/ and w/o gear):
With Gear
Damage: 67-102
DSP: 56.2
Atk speed 1.50

Without Gear
Damage: 37-72
DPS: 36.2
Atk speed 1.50

I tested on a frog and it was below 67, so I tested the 61 samples on the dragonmaw raiders in the Wetlands.

I did more testing, with the gear unequipped, and noticed no significant change to wand damage (n=71):
Min: 37
Avg: 52
Max: 71

Edit: changed forum character to the priest I’m referencing.

I’m not sure that wand damage was considered as spell damage for the gear in vanilla. I could have sworn it was considered ranged attack instead of magic.

I don’t know how it was in vanilla, but the character panel for my ranged damage increases by 24 when I have the two items equipped. So either my damage isn’t increasing properly, or the character panel is improperly saying my damage should be higher.

Can fifth that it is incorrectly showing damage. My wand is saying I do 85 dps, and hit 115-142 (gravscepter wand), but that is clearly not the case as I never hit about 57

Wands are Wands. They do not benefit from spell damage.

+Spell Damage modifiers work off of a 3.5s max cast time for 100% of the spell power to be applied.

If you have a shorter cast you will not get the full benefit. Only 3.5s casts and dots get the whole 9 yards.

I’m not talking about spells. The character panel literally says my ranged wand damage should be higher because of the spell power gear. If they do not benefit from spell damage, they should not display an increase equal to the spell damage bonuses my gear gives.

That’s how it was in Vanilla. Don’t know what else to tell you.

I have not really noticed any spell damage being attributed to my spells or the DoT spells for my warlock. My wand damage is slightly increased from the 49 spell dmg increase but spells like Shadow Bolt, Immolate, and Corruption no change.

A. do you have any random agility, bc that “increases” spell dmg.
B. you might very well be hitting for the stated dmg spread but after armor/resistance, the number you see is much lower.

Agility does not increase spell damage.

There are two misconceptions here:

  1. That spell damage should increase wand damage.
  2. That spell damage is increasing the character sheet numbers. (Edit: This is actually true.)

Attack power (edit: AND spell power) increases the character sheet numbers; yes, even for casters. This increase is purely in the UI, however. It does not actually impact wand damage. Spell damage does not increase wand damage in any way either. The ONLY increases to wand damage are from buffs, debuffs, and talents. That’s it.

The spell damage increases damage by a certain percentage of your spell power. Some spells will scale better with spell power than others. For dots, the damage increase gets applied to the total damage it deals and not PER tick.

For example:
Shadowbolt damage will be increased by about 85% of your spell power
With corruption the damage is increased by 100% of your spell power but it is over 6 ticks, so every tick gains 16.67% damage from spell power

Spell damage is added to that damage number because the devs were high and didn’t think to add a “spell damage” statistic. I wish spell damage buffed wand damage, that would be OP as hell and make the type of wand you get matter in cases of having type damage gear.

Honestly blizzard should improve the stat screen so we can see bonus spell damage, bonus healing, and bonus frost/arcane/fire/nature/shadow damage.

I get no changes, but some things are just for clarity more than convenience.

Wands aren’t spells.

I can say with certainty that frost damage gear works fine. My frostbolts were doing about 80ish damage without my “Frozen Wrath” gear equipped, but then doing about 110ish damage when I put it all on.

I haven’t tested it with wands, but I can say with about +41 frost damage across all my gear, my Blizzard only goes from doing 25 damage per second, to 26 damage per second, and wands tend to shoot pretty fast. So you need to understand that the faster something deals damage, the less things like “+10 Shadow Damage” items are actually going to increase its damage by.

If anything, I would say that it’s not a bug that your wand isn’t doing more damage… but rather the bug is that the wand damage on your character panel is suggesting you should do more because of shadow damage gear.

P.S. not saying that just because frost damage gear works means shadow damage gear works, just saying that it might not necessarily be a bug, but rather that it doesn’t actually affect wands, even if the character panel claims it does.

Wands may not be spells but thats not what the gear just affects. Its suppose to up spells and or other effects IE wands.
