Specs for Gaming PC to run WOW on Max Settings

As the title says, I am looking to build a new PC and want to know what everyone thinks I will need to have a no compromise system to run everything in WoW Shadowlands on Max, even in Raids and PvP.

What I am not looking for is crazy recommendations, as I am willing to spend money but not necessarily foolishly. I don’t really want to put out a number for a budget as I am willing to spend what is needed, but again I don’t want to spend money just for the sake of it. But if needed let’s just say hypothetically $2k or more wouldn’t be out of the question.

I already have speakers, a 4k monitor, and a BeQuiet full tower case I plan to re-use, so I am really looking at internal components.

I’ve seen word that AMD is bringing out some killer CPUs. Always seem to be a work in progress there though with Bios and Chipset updates

A good CPU is going to be your largest factor, followed by a good GPU(EDIT: I should say that they are actually pretty tied, but a bad CPU will hold back a good GPU in a lot of cases for playing WoW). Contrary to what people will insist about WoW not being that CPU intensive anymore, it still is… A GPU frame cannot be rendered until the CPU is done with it’s work and tells it to render a frame.

I think at most, the game will try to use four cores, but don’t quote me on that. So aim for a quad or hex core(physical cores) CPU. Usually, the more cores you throw into a chip, the lower their clock speeds will be when all threads are in use. It can be really misleading when you’re shopping for them because they usually list the single core speeds when no other cores are being used. The majority of the CPU load from WoW is single core work though, so your single thread speed is going to be extremely important. There are plenty of mid range CPUs you can go with that will do the job just fine and not destroy your wallet.

For GPU, obviously, you’re going to want something in the 3060+ range (even the 20XX series is still plenty fine, but why waste the money when the 30XX series is far more bang for the buck) depending on what resolution you want to play at. For 4k 144hz(tbh, anything over 90fps is overkill), you’ll want the higher to highest end video cards. Realistically, there’s no need to play at 4k if you’re on a 24in monitor sitting 2ft away. Just play at 1440 and if you need it, flip on some antialiasing. Going from 1080p to 4k is roughly a 300% increase in the amount of pixels to render. So if you get 150fps@1080, expect to drop to around 40fps@4k.

For ram, you don’t necessarily need the ultra highest top of the line ddr4 5000 or anything, but anything in the 3000-4000 range should be fine.

For storage, definitely get a fast SSD. WoW is all about streaming assets in an out. You don’t need to have a bleeding edge Samsung 980 pro, but try to get something semi-decently quick. The game will microstutter(on the 1-10ms scale, not half or whole second scale) a lot loading assets, which will cause drops in frame rate.

Make sure you’re power supply is rated for it all and that you’re not red-lining it. If you’re max draw is going to be 600w, get a 1000w power supply. Most PSUs have a max efficiency around the 50-60% load range and it helps prolong the life of the unit. Try to make sure it’s 80+ silver or gold or higher if you want to splurge.

Obviously, make sure you have good ventilation and fans for your case or just go with liquid cooling.

Thanks for the info and links so far.

I already have a corsair 1000 W modular PSU, but left it off as I am willing to buy bigger if I need to, but yeah will re-use that too if I can.

Also, for reference I am currently using a i7 8700K with 16 GB RAM, a M2 slot Samsung SSD (1 TB) and a GeForce 1080Ti. Now, and even when it was new (about 2.5 years old), I could never put all WoW settings on high and be able to play without issues, especially in large PvP or raids.

The CPU benchmarks linked above (single thread) don’t really show a lot of improvement and from what I read even the new GeForce cards are not significantly better. One suggestion I had from elsewhere was just to buy a second 1080Ti and use SLI and maybe up the RAM.

I am really not familiar with the AMD side of things, but am looking for a significant upgrade performance wise and not just a token increase. Right now I can play at graphic settings of 5 or 6 in raids, but even then I get lag especially with lots of aoe going on. Out in the wild by myself I can run it close to max right now, but as I said I want to have a machine capable of running everything at max under all conditions.

I should also add for Internet I am running a 1 Gig cable modem and usually get 26 ms home/world latency, so I don’t think too much is connection related, at least on my end.

You know Arizea if I was in your shoes this is what I would do. Overclock the 8700K 300 Ghz to 5k. That will boost your single thread to near what a 9900k has. Then go out and buy a beefy 30 series card. Plug it in then call it a day.

You are in the realm of diminishing returns. What is the exact monitor you have there.

I just wanted to check what you have for Ram and Motherboard and if the XMP was enabled. Ram is good looks like the XMP is on. The ASRock mainboard looks like a good one. Overclocking shouldn’t be an issue. Not sure what you have for a cooler. A good air cooler would likely suffice.

As far as cooler I have a Corsair water cooler H115i I think, but was actually thinking of going back to air as the pump is starting to make noise.

What are you running the game at currently. Do you have the FPS limiters active?

Regarding the Corsair cooler - the H115i is a good cooler. If the noise you hear is after you startup when its been shutdown for awhile that is normal.

I run full screen windowed (3840x2160) with Graphics Quality set at 7 and Raid and Battleground set down to 5. I have graphic lag when a lot of other players are around, especially with lots of AOE if I try going much higher than this. I do have the foreground framerate limited to 100 FPS and Target is set to 60.

I mean normally everything runs fine with these settings except during large raids or battlegrounds. I just would like to run everything on 10 even in raids and battlegrounds if it is at all possible and need to know the hardware required.

I know my current system is ok, but it is aging and if I am going to spend money I want the max performance I can get.

I hear you - no point keeping the FPS at 100. Monitor is 75hz. I don’t think that is going to gain you much though.

I hate to say it but I’m not sure the hardware out there right now can max a 4k monitor on all Ultra settings in a raid situation. Wow is a tough cookie that way these days. The old engine - still mostly single core - addons talking to one another - new graphic features. It all adds up.

I know that Blizzards internal testing at the beginning of BfA established just that. You see that yourself. The system you have was top of the line when BfA launched.

You would get close - but you may need to turn some settings down a notch.

Still looking for input on what hardware will run Shadowlands at max settings under all conditions.

While the input so far has been useful, it kind of got away from my original question. I am not against the idea of building a new PC from scratch if needed. I am more interested in if any current hardware is up to the task.

Max settings at what resolution and frame rate? 1080p and an unbudging 60fps can easily be done. You have to have a target to shoot for, in order to narrow down what you’ll need.

Probably not going to happen unless you spend an absurd amount on your PC. You’ll have plenty of dips. In newer zones, with far more detail to them, you might be able to average a decent frame rate, but as soon as there’s more than a handful of people casting spells, your frame rate is going to fluctuate wildly. One second, you might be at 120fps, the next second, 45fps. You could try the dynamic spell density+target frame rate, so that the engine would automatically drop some quality to avoid dips in FPS, but I have no clue how well it works in this engine vs other ones I normally work with.

Ultra shadows+ultra particles+ultra SSAO are going to be your main killers of frame rate, not to mention ray tracing if you enable it. Between the load WoW puts on CPUs(main game thread is single core, some tasks are offloaded to other cores for async tasks) and the abuse GPUs get from shadows+the forward rendering pass for translucent particle effects(99% of the spell effects in the game and all the wispy fog sheets in modern zones), games like WoW require waaaaaay more power than you’d think.
