Hate speech, including negative comments that target another player’s identity, including aspects like race, gender, or ability
Does this mean that we are going to see an end to speech that is degrading to straight white men as well?
I may not be part of that group myself but I do know that they have taken a great deal of abuse on the forums and while people who say anything um… lets call it opinionated about other genders gets an immediate ban. This is not applied equally to those who sling abuse at the other side.
I only ask because this can lead to moderators confirming their own opinions and beliefs which leads to the weird echo chamber that is the forums. Where one side feels persecuted and doesn’t interact for fear of retribution. As far as I can tell that is as bad as what its intended to fight against.
I think that’s the main worry here. Social media has a hard left bias, where saying something disparaging about “white cis men” is fine and dandy but if you flipped that to be about anyone else, it’s “hate speech”.
The concern is that people looking at it will just apply their own, likely left-leaning, bias to everything up to and including things like “men can’t be lesbians” or something which some people actually consider to be transphobic or something. Is that actionable? What about saying a man with intact genitalia is a man no matter if they claim to be a woman?
See where I’m going? It’s a line that is very easy to turn into “anything not pushing my narrative is hate speech”
Until they remove a certain NPC from Maldraxxus, I have to assume it will be completely alright for one group to attack another, but the minute the other side speaks up there will be serious repercussions and severe punishments handed out.
All it takes to destroy credibility in a system, is that sort of bias and unfortunately it seems at this moment in time like that is alright Blizzard’s books; as long as the correct groups of people are on the receiving end of a lion’s share of the punishments.
If that wasn’t the case, then they’d of already applied an equal standard to the company policy where it relates to ‘all’ NPCs months ago. So barring some proof otherwise, I see this as just another attempt at purging those they deem ‘undesirable’ much like NCSoft did with City of Heroes.
Tragically I expect that it’ll also result in the same ultimate outcome as Positron’s efforts too. Let’s be honest. Anyone worth their salt already knew not to be a complete jerk to their fellow players years ago.
It’s called having integrity and honor.
I just wonder how this will shake out for RP Servers. First person to say something crude or semi rude in character is going to get actioned I suspect, because the problem has always been the automated nature of these systems. I’ll hold out hope for a better outcome, but I’m not holding my breath.
Fortunately being Forsaken, breathing isn’t super critical, in the event I start to do so.
I hope so, I believe in equality. I mean actual equality, that everyone should be treated equally no matter their race, sex, sexuality, or religion. I don’t mean fake equality where I am pushing for more than anyone else, which seems to be the case at times.
well, this is gonna 404 quick lol.
anyway. As the intended target there, my self worth isnt dictated by someone elses stupidity.
I know how to ignore anyone who annoys me.
just do it.
We can try to fight our nature, but human beings are pack animals. We’re going to run with the pack most of the time…whatever our pack just happens to be doing.
I dont have enough faith in human beings, given our history, to believe we’re even capable of not following one pack or another.
and so, this crap will always be here. The mobs will ensure that it is.
No, I agree. Ive been the target of some of this stuff myself
See my last post.
Its evolution…its who we are. Just check out mans history. Dont expect more from us than we’re capable of or youre setting yourself up for disappointment.
Not sure you’re going to see an “end” to anything. People will always be jerks if they can be, regardless of consequence. Some people become jerks precisely because a consequence is present.
The whole, “don’t tell me what to do!” attitude is strong with people these days. How dare they suggest I try to help my fellow players! Now I’m gonna deliberately train mobs to people in the open world, into AoE, and shadowmeld for funsies!
I agree here we tend to divide ourselves into tribes whether that be economic, racial or just that we are gamers. And if the group is too large we divide ourselves further.
I think part of it stems from the feeling that you mean so little when your part of a group that consists of millions or more.
