Was thinking about trying a space game and being a long time wow player, I would like to hear other wow players thoughts on the best games out there. Im not planning on quitting wow by any means, just feel like I’ve missed out on a lot of games over the years. I’m looking at eve, elite dangerous and star citizen. Any fellow wow players tried any of these games and what are your thoughts, coming from wow?
I had high hopes for Stellaris, since I’m tired of playing games with strangers, but alas, that game is a bummer.
I loved Eve but it takes a bit to get the hang of the space-pod rather than actual spaceship feel of space things.
It’s also PvP. I love how the players actually create the story of the universe around them but the learning curve can be quite steep. Joining a group is really necessary I feel, though it’s been years since I played.
I loved the game, really I did. But the time I needed to invest in getting better was more than I wanted/could do.
I haven’t kept up with what changes they have made in the years since I played, so take what I say with many grains of salt.
I second Eve as a solid choice.
Eve online is a good game… so is star citizen but its poorly optimized
Stellaris if you are into space sims rather than being in the ship, for in the ship stuff Elite Dangerous is supposed to be good. I have Everspace 2 (which is a pretty neat and fun fighter ship size space game, no mega ships here sadly). Space engineers you can technically build a ship but that one gets pretty complicated.
Breathedge is a survival, base building game set in space. It has a narrator that tries to be witty to add some humour to the game but that humour can fall flat and get a tad bit annoying.
Also don’t forget about The Outer Worlds. It’s from Obsidian who made Fallout New Vegas. If you loved Fallout New Vegas then you’ll love Fallout New Vegas in space.
Never got into it. But I was always envious of those that could.
I believe I saw a video a few weeks back where Eve announced Excel integration, and people were losing their minds. That just couldn’t be me. Ever.
Elite Dangerous is a game my friend was really into. But alas, I also couldn’t get into it. Definitely think it’s easier to get into than Eve though.
Star Citizen. Just do not waste your breath on that “game”.
I hear No Mans Sky is genuinely a good game and has come a long way.
I’m fond of NMS.
Eve is really hard to get into without somebody to walk you through it.
I suggest the mass effect series for a nice set of space games. Even andromeda is a good game underneath the weird and often terrifying cutscene animations.
I have played Eve and Elite Dangerous. If you’re in to simulators and PvP, you’ll get a lot out of them. Elite Dangerous is much more of a simulator than an MMO. It’s very reminiscent of the old Mechwarrior games. Eve is extremely PvP oriented.
I think Eve is F2P with restrictions, so you can try it out to see if you like it. Elite Dangerous is B2P. They are both very, very grindy.
When I saw the spreadsheet announcement, I could understand the excitement of the Eve crowd. My brother had actually written an api to pull trade info and populated a sheet of his own years ago.
Eve is just that sort of PvP game. Back in the snail mail days, I played a PvP game with friends and one of the group would keep a spreadsheet and tabs of where everyone was, where they should go, who they should attack, etc. Very time intensive in planning.
Eve is a lot like that (or was), but with more people and far more dynamic rather than turn-based. And because of that, there’s a lot of book-keeping one should do in order to do well.
And that is mostly why I dropped. To get as good as I wanted to be would require too much of my time. I feel that’s true of a lot of PvP which is why I avoid it these days. Too many other RL commitments.
could just wait for starfield
I’ve heard that no mans sky is actually supposed to be pretty decent now that it’s gotten a ton of content updates.
there’s a ton of variety and it really depends what you want out of a “space game”. Do you want to manage colonies? Zoom around in a spaceship? explore alien worlds on foot? There’s games that fulfill each of those and plenty more.
I’d personally stay away from star citizen.
Why what’s wrong with star citizen? It looks beautiful
in short? it’s a scam.
it’s been in development for 10+ years and has had 400 million in funding and still has nearly nothing to show for all that time and money.
It will never be finished.
But ive made over 30k selling pixel space ships so its been good to me.
Its honestly worth buying a basic package and one of the subs when the ship of the month is something cool (or nov/dec when they do free fly events) to just fly around. Flying too qnd landing on a planet seamlessly is… a wild experience. Theres something absolutely amazing about just the idea of it qll. It really scratches that space exploration itch… for q couple hours till all the endless bugs catch up and you realize its basically a space trucking simulator.
But, to me anyways, that initial kick of the feeling of space travel… of taking off from a planet, anywhere on a planet… and flying into space, and going to another planet where you just fly down and land… anywhere… honestly makes it all worth it.
It will never be done, it will probably collapse and be a giant joke. But its also the closest thing most of us will ever get to space exploration of any kind, and thats pretty cool.
Throw on some glitchmob “drink the sky” and fly around.
“Space…is big. Really big. You just won’t believe how vastly hugely mind-bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it’s a long way down the road to the chemist, but that’s just peanuts to space.”
HA
That game will never see the light of day. If you are smart don’t give those guys a dime.
I bought Elite Dangerous on the ps4 for 12 dollars last year. That itched my space game desire.
I’ll throw my vote for NMS too. I’ve been watching some Star Citizen videos, and it just looks like a ripoff of NMS minus the QoL updates and polish.
I hear stellaris is good, haven’t had the pleasure of playing.
EVE has such a steep learning curve i swear it goes backwards, and there are plenty memes about it too, I tried, i failed to comprehend.

That’s what I’m kind of worried about with eve too. I feel like I’m a competent player and all, but I’m just not sure I want to take the time to learn it all the right way. However, I’ve never seen as anything as epic in gaming as some of the wars that has happened in the last 10 years there. If you knew all the politics and backstories, I’m sure those were some wild rides that you just can’t get out of wow anymore
