So this happened this afternoon.
I go to the store. Get things for dinner. I see someone dressed nice as if they were going to a Christmas party. Nice sweater, make up, the hair looked like she came from a salon. Pretty. Age was, I’d say mid-twenties(?).
I walk by, smile and say “Merry Christmas”.
It was a split second and I just have must have called her the worst being in the world.
“I don’t celebrate Christmas! I’m agnostic! You should learn some manners and don’t assume everyone celebrates Christmas!”
Then she turned away and stormed out of the store.
A split second went by and I was kinda shocked. So I called out to her “Happy Winter Veil Ms. Darkspear!” Then I almost saw a slight hesitation like she knew I just called her a troll.
I smiled and went to get groceries. The funny part is that the shift manager heard it and plays WoW. He was rolling when he heard Darkspear.
Even though it’s the Holidays, beware of those Trolls. They’re everywhere.

See, I don’t understand this sort of behavior. You were trying to be polite, but she ignored the intent and went straight for the words. That’s just… bizarre.

I don’t understand this drama people have to pull over “Merry Christmas.” Don’t celebrate it? That’s fine, respond to me with “Happy Hanukkah,” or “Happy Kwanzaa,” or even just “Happy Holidays.”
The fact that people get offended over it is just petty and selfish to me.
And here’s what really gets me about what happened to the OP: Christmas is based off of quite a few pagan traditions.

True.
It’s also why I give mad props to anyone working retail or with the public during the Holidays or any other time of year.
My career path is behind the scenes so not really front-line. I still treat folks with respect. If I was to try CS now, you’d hear of my exploits on google news. Lol.

Did this actually happen or did you make it up?

I’m an atheist but I still celebrate Christmas, cause it is fun. Obviously I don’t celebrate the religious part of it but still. I hate people like that, if someone saying Merry Christmas to her was the worst part of her day, she is pretty lucky. Miserable people.

Maybe you shouldn’t assume someone celebrates christmas and say happy holidays instead.

maybe focus less on the words themselves and focus more on the stink those words give off

Corner them and stand imposingly before them and demand that they have a merry christmas. It doesn’t matter if either of you like it, just do it.

Maybe people should stop finding every little thing to be offended about and understand that “Merry Christmas” is a wish for happiness. No one is going around and saying “Be blessed by Jesus and the Holy Spirit!” It’s been a generic greeting for probably a century, at least.
