This game is ultimately based on AD&D.
The reason magic users had the limitation of
- casting time
- not being able to move while casting
- low hit points
- unable to wear armor
- unable to use most weapons
Was to balance out the staggering damage that magic users put out. Gygax himself said so.
So, why are we struggling and doing button gymnastics to be uncompetitive against armor wearers with instant cast abilities that do wizard- like damage on the run?
Why even have the limitations on Mages to balance out a nerfed advantage?
Why make the cannon glass then take away the ammunition?
No, I am not some kid clamoring for more power; this design makes no sense. Maybe because the game is based on everquest instead of being based on D&D, people forgot why the archetypes were the way they were in the first place.

Because it’s too difficult to balance the concept of a glass cannon. If the glass cannon lasts the entire raid fight but does more damage than everyone else, then there’s no reason to take anything else. If it makes you feel any better, I have more trouble (in general) staying alive as melee than I did as mage. Melee classes have a lot more to deal with and a lot less wiggle room.

How so?
This is not a challenge; this is me trying to understand.
I may need you to articulate more. If I had to guess you’re asking about why melee can be harder (I already explained why we can’t be heads and shoulders above everyone else): Sometimes ground AOE can be hard to see through other melee or even mobs. Your wiggle room around it is just your melee range. On my mage (or anything else ranged) I just have to get out of bad and I have a full 40yd range to work with. On melee, it’s like 5yds you get to dance around while trying to dodge AOE you can’t always see easy. I could just be a noob/getting used to it, but I find melee more challenging than ranged.

That is what I was asking.
Thank you.

Being in melee range is very punishing because of the clutter near the boss. With all the other melee, the tanks, boss mechanics and spell animations going on, it doesn’t feel good to play. Ranged damage is my thing, and mage has never been bad at it (though we aren’t always at the top of the damage meters). I love wizard in D&D (my favorite class), but it’s not because of the glass cannon aspect. I love wizard because I like collecting and using spells creatively. I love mage because of the fantasy of the class and them playing very smoothly.
