Something missing

Does anyone know why retail seems so antisocial now? Or why the game feels like a power fantasy? I’m out of the loop.

Times have changed. Games have changed. We’ve become a society of instant gratification thanks to social media and 30 second TikTok videos. ultimately everybody is in a rush to do their own thing and thanks to the changing times everybody feels that their opinion is the only right and valid opinion, and that everybody else either needs to listen to them or they are somehow a troll or a jerk. Not to worry though. There are a few of us still out there who actually treat gamers like gamers. But if they play stupid games, they’re gonna win stupid prizes, and I will gladly write the eulogy for it.

A few reasons. The biggest two are queue finder, and M+

Queue finder is obvious. You go in, you group up with a bunch of people likely not even in your server and you won’t likely ever see again, rapidly clear the dungeon or raid, drop out. Talking seems a waste when you likely won’t see each other again.

The M+ thing is kind of an extension of this, but further magnified by the fact that people are trying to get the maximum out of their keys, and barely timing a key, or worse, tanking your key, feels horrible and makes a lot of people quick to blame very aggressively. This means many social interactions ends up being very hostile, and when people have enough of that, they may opt out of being social at all

A few steps taken recently helps alleviate that, like keys not lowering past a specific point, or delves giving people an alternate solo way to progress (thereby separating the anti-socials out of the groups and increasing the odds of people talking), but the societal norm is so ingrained into WoW players that most will treat others in groups like NPCs anyway

Oh and this, too. Gotta get dat dopamine overload

Have you ever tried to talk to anyone?

Seconding this. They’re still out there. Just not nearly as many as there were during the earlier days of the internet

Am I missing something here? Did a streamer put out a recent video or something? Because there are suddenly a few threads on this subject and I’m bogged as to why.

I’ve had no issues with people being social. And I don’t know what a “power fantasy” is.

Because you don’t get to really play the game without engaging with the power fantasy.

The entire game is predicated on getting invited to content - and Blizzard, of their own volition, made it so players should increase their chances of success by inviting people with the highest levels of power.

If you can’t achieve that? Hope you like collecting armor and mounts or something. Because the game is effectively over for you at max level.

The community has collectively been burned too many times by negative interactions with other players.

So quite a few just opt to play solo and deal with people only when absolutely necessary, or otherwise only with the small group of players they trust.

It’s just not worth the effort.

I talk in chat lots so I think that counts as being social.

During S1 I met a few nice people doing Delves.

S2 tho they made delves so much more difficult with just 1 person that bringing 4 of my new delve friends along makes it a near impossible task.

Used to be fun, but yea, not with the new difficulty scaling when adding friends.

I don’t raid unless I have too, and this season I just wanted the chips so did enough LFR to get 2 items. Not sure I’ll bother with the 3rd cuz S3 will be starting in just a few weeks anyway.

also…whats “power fantasy” mean?

sorry, the only streamer I watch is wowgramma78 and really only when theres a drop for retail.

also i know this is the retail forum but a lot more people talk in mop classic in my experience

I have, I get ignored 9/10 but I try

idk, I got i677 playing just delves and enough LFR’s to get 6 chips.

we got tons of stuff to do besides raids/m+.

World bosses I can just use the grp finder to get aq group instead of standing in town asking in 1 or /2 trying to make one.

I pay for my sub with gold so I farm herbs, ore, go fishing, run around collecting treasures, doing WQ, doing the new events like Hallowfall for the mogs.

We got tons of stuff to do that you don’t need a group for.

Mostly just need groups for raids and m+.

edit: I should also mention I just started doing the visions for the helm enchant. I need 5 more bloods and I got the greater version. Then I’ll be done there. I don’t like the mogs much.

If someone wants to seek me out because they enjoy the way i play its fine. However, the majority of interactions i get is someone following me around and trying to out tap my kill so i dont get experience reset on skills that it applies to. Such a great playerbase.

Society…people…changes over time.
This isnt the same player base from 2005…or 2015 even.

I haven’t changed.

Have you met people?

Grass is always greener on the other side of the fence.

I always wanted to be able to log on and have others there with stuff ready to do, instant invites, plenty of options, etc.

But then once I get a taste of all of that, I just want to be left alone so I can fish in peace, lol.

This is the player base they cultivated with their design choices. There are good and bad things about it, depending on your perspective.

… And that’s all I have to say about that.
