somechanger: Man i just want to play wow with retail balance and retail quality of life…
the man: why not play retail?
somechanger: No! I don’t like those changes and want them in classic
man: Oh, well they released SOD for that
somechanger: No! I didn’t like SOD, its too many changes I just want some
man: what changes?
irrational somechanger: buff my class, make leveling faster
man: that sounds like -
irrational somechanger: No! that’s not it, I want them to add content, new quests and dungeons!
nervous man: Uhh, I swear, there’s a version, where they, and you know i’m sure there might be 1-2% difference, but SO-
irate and low IQ somechanger: NOOO NOOO! MAKE NOT SOD, SOD NOW!
Hear me out. I actually do want some changes, that I feel are in the spirit of classic, and I don’t enjoy SoD (and retail is awful imo). I’ll break it down, and the same 12 Vanilla purists on these forums can tell you they actually know me better than I know myself:
No one owns the definition of “Classic” and I define classic as the original trilogy- Cata and beyond are, in my view, too far into the retail-style QoL changes. Even instant dungeon transporting in WOTLK is a slight step ahead of my line.
SoD was NOT about QoL or class balancing. It was, by Blizzard’s own definition, a seasonal “what if” server to see how far they could take things; to “make every class as overpowered as warriors.” SoD also does not progress through the trilogy, so, it’s not “Classic” as much as it is some insane version of Vanilla. That they added QoL into SoD was not really the sticking point, it was insane class power and old content recycled into instanced content.
I see 0 issue with taking a C or D tier spec and making them B tier by increasing some damage here, providing a paladin taunt there. It does not, to me, effect the spirit of classic. I will gladly stand on your side of the fence if we raise a poor spec up to B tier and people on this forum start complaining that it still isn’t S tier. I find it silly to expect bliz to do this, which is part of the reason why SoD got real silly.
If this post is in regards to the Anniversary Realms, then the #NoChangers are the ones being irrational by playing on here in the first place because:
Expedited phases, servers are racing towards confirmed TBC
Dual Spec
Instant Mail
Boon
LFG Tool
Buff/Debuff limit
These are not #NoChange servers, they just aren’t. #NoChangers are more aligned with Era. The rub is that Bliz did not release a fresh Era realm for these folks to go, and they feel that the anniversary realms have been slipping from their hands ever since Bliz confirmed dual-spec and panic seemed to set in that these aren’t Vanilla Era servers, they are (likely) Classic servers as I have defined above. I’ve even seen what I would have guessed was a #NoChanger by their grumpy demeanor actually say “Well, I like the current changes, but don’t you dare change another thing!” At this point, idk man, that’s an oddly specific line to draw in the sand.
I disagree with so many of the Vanilla Purist talking points, yet I still wish you all had an actual #NoChanges fresh server. You don’t because blizzard tried to house two groups of players into the same fresh servers: Vanilla Purists and #SomeChanges/TBC Lovers (three groups, if you separate the latter). If we are keeping score, the #SomeChanges and TBC people seem to be winning here, and while I belong to that group, I am bummed for you guys - you haven’t been given an actual, NoChanges fresh Vanilla since 2019.
This is completely unacceptable and I don’t know why Bliz didn’t suffer through having a near-duplicate set of game files available for download on the launcher that contained SoD from this crap. I totally agree with this, but this can be solved with better development- my guess is they were concerned about having to maintain two, near duplicate sets of game files for SoD and Vanilla. I get that, but if the goal of Era is to be a time capsule, it’s justified imo.
I agree with this, but we need to understand what we mean when we say “bonus power.” Bonus power compared to what? If we buff a d-tier spec to b-tier, then the bonus power doesn’t degrade the game anymore than other classes already in b-tier. That’s why SoD failed imo- player power wasn’t even actually contained to be at the warrior level- it just went out of control relative to any Vanilla spec.
I support an xp buff on these servers, I see your argument here against this. It’s my preference that TBC had the right leveling speed, something that is shared with nearly every one of my IRL friends who are playing- it’s too slow, especially for a version of the game that will only last 1 year. Also, I don’t think the halving of xp that came with TBC actually did much damage to the game. This is just my view, and I know the purists are fuming over this. But again, I treat these realms for what they are: explicitly NOT #NoChanges realms and, in all likelihood, actually original trilogy progression servers. Borrowing an update that is inevitably coming in a year or less does not seem outlandish (pun intended)
Just so we’re all clear, what “it is” is, by definition, a #someChanges server, and we’ll probably see more changes, no matter how hard one camp or the other pushed on these forums.
We haven’t been given an actual, NoChanges fresh Vanilla since 2004.
2019 were already SomeChanges - not enough to please most change-lovers, but too many to please the real Vanilla purists.
I do not understand your pooling TBC and SomeChanges here. TBC with NoChanges would be very welcome in my opinion.
I do not play on the Anniversary servers exactly because I am an old, stubborn NoChanger
I hear you- didn’t they try spell batching at first in 2019? Didn’t last. A time capsule server should be just that. truly sorry they failed you.
SomeChanges is a bit nebulous, but I don’t recall anyone freaking out over the paladin seal updates we got with TBC Classic. I could be misremembering, though. I recall lots of people asking for dual spec for TBC as well. I feel like those who are excited to play TBC are largely not panicked over dual spec, or minor class tweaks. So, I lump them together, I’m sure that bothers some. What I DON’T recall is TBC players asking for an even shorter leveling journey, which is partially why I believe TBC nailed it there. And I’m not interested in cutting it any shorter than that.
As a SomeChanger, I hope for your sake they do something for you guys.
