Some thoughts on Ret Paladin

Hey all, been some weeks now since pre patch has been launched and I’ve been doing a lot of testing (strictly on ret) and seeing a lot of interactions and such that should not be in the game.

The talent Final Reckoning is actually quite buggy. Note this is the ability of that makes ES do quite literally your entire hp (it’s on use effect buffing your holy power spenders by an additional 50% for 8 seconds, this is used before ES). The final reckoning passive however is mostly the problematic issue. It’s passive has a chance when the ability is on cool down to increase the damage of your next holy power spender by 10%. This however is bugged and can proc when the ability is not on cool down, so for example this can proc as you are about to press Final Reckoning and can increase your Execution Sentence by 60% instead of the 50%. Furthermore while Final Reckoning is applied on the target, the passive can still proc, which also can modify your execution sentence damage, this should not work like that.

This next issue is a pure pre patch thing which is just very troll. The Azerite Trait, Light’s Decree merges damage with the talent Sanctified Wrath which drastically increases Sanctified Wrath damage, and makes Light’s Decree damage un nerfed in pvp (I’ve hit upwards of 4K damage just based off of Sanctified Wrath damage, this is capped at an 8 target aoe)

Next issue isn’t so much a bug but a very unhealthy pvp talent in the form of Aura of Reckoning, nobody likes an ability that is mostly rng, causes auto attack to hit for 3k, and have no cool down. Blizzard please revert to it being an active button to press on a min cd. Also would be cool if they could let you use it to extend crusade duration that would be cool (I’m pretty sure crusade will be a dead talent in SL if nothing is done to it to boost its effectiveness)

Is it used before? Ive been messing with it both ways but no in depth testing, but I figured u used it after. Seeing as both ES and FR are 8 sec durations using it before the 50% buff would drop off a sec before the big hit of ES…or does it gain its buff off the initial button press after having FR active?

No.

Yes this is the way it works, having tested it both ways. It’s changed since it’s initial implementation (used to be FR second). Judgement however also double dips on ES as well I believe

ES damage modifiers snapshot when it’s used.

These bugs should definitely be fixed. Good find. I am skeptical they will be though.

Pre-patch stuff so while aggravating and making me wish they had disabled all azerite and essences there’s really nothing to do about it. Honestly I haven’t even messed with this talent or crusade since pre-patch hit.

I hate this ability now and never take it. Does the mega-buffed auto attack even scale well at 60? If I play Ret in SL I will probably just take lawbringer/sanc/unbound/vengenace aura in most matchups if 3’s add in law and order for 2’s. Feel like they just changed this to give the talent the feel of a VoP proc once it goes away. Dumb change.

ok cool, thanks for info. ill do more testing when I get home… I had mostly been timing my judgment as my 4th or 5th hp > wings > ES > FR. in most fights. But if I’m missing out on dmg ill try flipping FR and ES. either way its so telegraphed and no way to avoid missing out on a few sec of wings & buff due to set up, I want to squeeze every bit of the op burst I can while I can b4 slowly walking around hitting like a wet noodle for the next 45 sec haha

Ya I’ve messed with all of them to see what combinations I like and it’s so absurdly troll to look at my damage breakdown and see Sanctified Wrath be 60% of my damage.

Yes, at 60 I think you’ll be hitting 6-7k auto attacks, which scales higher more and more as our weapons scale later on the xpac.
Overall I think a really bad change made to appease the boomer Rets who think the Reckoning /sit macro in Classic was skillful. As of rn with how absurd the proc rate is I think I would recommend it over Lawbringer.

huh ok that makes sense. I forgot it was a thing then. So it procs a lot? My initial thought was it wouldn’t as most people don’t stack crit in PvP. Depends on the classes though and crit is better now so people would have more of it. It probably procs even more now than it iwll at 60 with crucible and other essence dots. I’ll have to mess around with it but all I’ve really done since pre-patch is skirms and bg’s so no time to really even let it stack before the fight is over.

I’ve had it proc 6 times in a minute. It’s very good against classes that have fast attacks/dot tics.
Also it stacks with vision of perfection wings procs as well which is beyond troll.

With that talent, ret aura, and vision major I’ve had 2 min straight of wings in rbgs and bgs

Well it’s literally how the passive is supposed to work, should only proc if Final Reckoning is not on cooldown. And since it can proc when its off cooldown you can wait for a proc then use it to increase ES damage. I’ve never seen it procs on cooldown personally though.

The Light’s Decree version of the damage is still getting nerfed in pvp. I remember Pikachu testing it and it was doing 6k outside of arena and 3k inside. So the talent itself isn’t nerfed in pvp, but the light’s decree damage still is. (They are still separate entity but combined into the same name when using the talent)

True, I thought Aura of Reckoning would be bad at first, but in pratice it’s honestly way better than Vision of Perfection and Hammer of Reckoning combined lmao. Reverting it back to Hammer of Reckoning would balance it back in power.

Pretty sure it’s supposed to only proc when the ability is on CD. Rather toxic for it to proc when it isn’t on cd.

Yep. Incredibly toxic ability that shouldn’t work like that. The fact I was able to go an entire 2s match (2.5 min game) and only needed to press my wings in the opener and have my rng wings proc just carry the game for me is absolutely disgusting.

It’s meant to be sustained damage when you’re not using it, if it was working when it’s on cooldown it would be proccing only when you’re using it so you would get +60% damage on every spender you do during Final Reckoning. But we already know the spender damage increase should be reduced in pvp.

They could remove the passive of FR, give it to Fires of Justice on top of what it does, and give Final Reckoning a leap since it already target ground location.

Tested it for myself, I was doing 6-7k outside and 2.5k average in arena with x3 light’s decree and x2 avenger’s might, light’s decree damage portion is definitively getting nerfed in pvp, but maybe the weekly build broke it so idk actually.

Indeed, it has to be changed really bad, would be the perfect opportunity to just revamp our pvp talents. Lawbringer could be baseline since its just damage. Divine Punisher can just be replaced by something new, so does luminescence. Law and Order could be a rank 2 leveling for Hand of Hindrance since we have one of the worst slow in the game with the worst mobility coupled together. Jurisdiction is a strong utility talent, but it’s not strong enough compared to aura of vengeance, lawbringer, aura of recknoning, unbound freedom and blessing of sanctuary to allow a spot. Should be baseline.

Cleansing light seems niche, could actually be replaced with hpal shadow resistance aura.

Honestly, Hand of Purity in mop, wod was a better Eye for an Eye we have currently. 30sec cd, 15% damage reduction and dot damage reduction by 80% for 6sec. Or just bring back Cataclysm Sacred Shield.

Might just be an issue with me then idk. I’ve consistently gotten 3-4K. Regardless it’s kinda broken.

I would prefer hpalla wall given back to us, and SoR giving us a 5-10% DR with WoG being put on a 30 sec cd. Would balance the class a lot more. Maybe also put blessing of spell warding on the unbreakable spirit talent row in place of eye for an eye

Don’t you want to use it after casting ES, so that the 50% damage is active when the ability “finishes”, and not the other way around?

If they changed it to snap-shot the initial hit since I first tested it, I didn’t notice. I’ll have to go test it again today :thinking:

This would be incredible actually. It would be a welcome change to add a 1-min mobility ability, even if it is tied to a dps ability it allows for the decision to use it defensively to survive or offensively to net a kill. That would match the current dichotomy of using WoG vs. TV with HP as well.

It snapshots everything, even your buffs. Blood of the enemy, trinkets, etc. You want a FR proc, Judgment, and FR itself for max damage. Make sure you have wings and seraphim also when you cast it.

If you cast FR after ES it gains 20% of the FR damage but not the debuff

In SL itself it snapshots the Pelagos mastery buff as well if you have it up. Only issue is you lose the 20% of the divine toll damage plus what it buffs if you want to use it before ES. I think the 20% includes lawbringer damage but I’m not sure.

well I wasnt going into baseline abilities, obviously shield of vengeance is crap and gimmicky. Don’t know about spellwarding, do we really want another immunity that will bring us down in design because of it?

SotR should be usable while using a 2h honestly, it’s a magical shield anyway. Not sure 30sec cd on wog would probably be too much, 10-15sec would be a nice balance with current pacing.

Having Spellwarding as an option would go a long way for ret. Currently we are free kills against spellcleave, I don’t know many classes that have a 5min cd that’s as counterable as BoP.

We are freekill because all our defensive are physical only, if you change them into all damage reduction it would help us greatly.

Spellwarding is just another bop on 5min cd, so you really want another 5min def cd? Because I sure don’t, that’s not purgeable and you can’t be cc except by physical cc. So another thing for everyone to complain about ret to be nerfed.

Divine Protection + Eye for an Eye 30% all damage reduction would go a long way, both 1min cd and you can cycle them way more often.

I agree 100%, I’d rather have the DR on shorter CD. However the game is setup where we could easier get Spellwarding, there is even an anima power where if you cast WoG you get Spellwarding every 1 min or something.

If we are balanced around BoP, then being able to actively trade it out for a magic version is an easy solution imo.

TBH I think Uthers will be the best legendary for pvp. Freedom alone will be good enough to take it
