[SOLVED]CPU Fan sounds like a jet engine only when i'm playing wow

Hello,

Recently my CPU Fan has been sound like a jet engine only when i play wow. no other game gets anywhere near as loud. i don’t know if it’s because i applied new thermal paste wrong or wow doesn’t like my computer anymore. i thank the people who are trying to help me in advance.

My fan gets really cranked up while playing, but my laptop does remain cool.

This game is more intensive on CPU’s than GPU’s.

When was the last time you took canned air to the inside of your case?

Bastion and Ardenweald are really taxing. My temps increase in these zones both on my last rig and my current one.

It would be nice if we had an option to tone down atmospheric particle effects or whatever it is that’s causing this.

My temps are legitimately lower in epic BGs than they are in these zones.

More than likely its something with your settings, as WoW is more CPU intense rather than GPU intense.

The fan running or not is less important than the specific temperatures your CPU is hitting.

Two questions:

  1. What does your setup look like? Desktop/laptop/CPU model/cooler/etc
  2. If you open Open Hardware Monitor with WoW open, how hot does it say your CPU gets?

It’s the game not your computer. Had a csr go through and basically try to blame my computer drivers etc etc. It’s the game and how old it’s engine is.

This only happens to me in Ardenweald. Actually, I’m not even sure if it’s my CPU or GPU fan that goes into overdrive there. I just stay out of Ardenweald as much as possible regardless, so I haven’t really tried to address it.

Some of the more obvious things to try:

  • Tweak your game settings. There are a few options that are particularly intensive, and you may find if you lower or disable them, the system won’t work as hard (and if you don’t care about the tradeoff, might as well roll with it).
  • Assuming you have a modern system… cap your frame rate, or lower the cap. Again, it simply won’t have to work as hard if you reduce it. Find a happy medium.
  • As long as you’re monitoring temps and making sure you don’t actually overheat, try tweaking your CPU fan profiles. Out of the box, mine had very aggressive settings (running the fans very high very often), which was completely unnecessary. I lowered the speeds and raised the ramp up thresholds as much as possible, and my system is much more quiet overall.

If that noise started soon after you applied that thermal paste then check that first. You may have applied too much, its supposed to be a very thin layer.

This happened to me a couple of times for no apparent reason and then stopped. I wasn’t doing anything CPU intensive at the time and there was nothing running in the background. :man_shrugging:

If you’re getting like 200 FPS or something, you might want to cap the framerate. That’s the only reason I can think of that would heat up your CPU.

Ardenweald isn’t bad for me, but I think both times that my fan took off was when I was in Bastion. It probably does have something to do with particles, so maybe try turning them down if you plan on playing a lot there.

Laughs in liquid cooling

The computer can play a part too, just saying.

Gotta DIY though if you want liquid cooling, otherwise it’s ridiculously overpriced. And then there’s the worry of having a gigantic container of oil around, and upgrading parts…

Then you have to flush that coolant every so often too.

Artic’s Liquid Freezer II series is very good AIO in terms of bang for buck, but I prefer giant air coolers like the NH-D15.

Do you have antialiasing on? I think it reacts severely with particular transparent textures.

I always keep AA on, at least 4x.

Unlike most modern games, WoW is very CPU dependent. While other games can use of your GPU to handle graphical related processes, WoW is so old it was before decent graphics cards existed.
