Solo shuffle explained

I finally get it, I didnt understand why every player in my solo shuffles would gain or lose very random amounts of rating but I finally get it.

You can literally win 1/6 games and gain rating as long as your current rating is lower than your matchmaking rating. I thought you would at least have to win 3/6 to gain rating… but there was one match I went 3/6 and gained 0.

Also, solo shuffle overall seems like a much easier way to get higher rated compared to 2’s or 3’s where the groups are more coordinated. Even at 2100mmr Solo shuffle no one really calls plays or targets, just yolo and hope to win…

Its easy to get to 1600 but after that as dps then it depends on 3 things.

If one healer is not as good as the other one then you might be capped at 3 wins and the good healer might get 6 wins. Unless you carry the bad healer or peel really well for the bad one.

If you have a bad dps and 2 equal healers that bad dps could lose 6 and cost you 3 games.

Depending on rating of others you could win 4 or 5 games and still lose rating because a healer was rated really low but he was actually a good healer and took a couple of games from you.

So its quite random and as good as you are you can be gated by how good or bad your 2 team members are.

Thanks, this is pretty helpful. My experience tonight (before the wine kicked in) was pre-1300 rating I was owning it as arms warrior. Then at 1356 I died 6 out 6 rounds in one match, and then 3 times the next. Now I got to claw my way back from 1200ish. The sheer randomness of your teammates’ and foes classes makes it pretty unpredictable. I love it!

This is pretty spot on. It’s also spec specific too. A good DH/DK/etc. can hardcarry a bad secondary DPS or even healer, but a good boomkin/mage/ele sham/ret/etc. cannot carry a bad healer because they’ll just die.

It’s why solo shuffle ratings hold different weight. A DH/DK/War with 2200+ in solo will most likely cap out at 1600 in 3v3. Same for Preservation vs Hpal

you only play with the same dps player twice so you’d go 4-2, only the healers go 3-3 so this would be a huge advantage for dps players

I’m pretty sure this is not true. In the same situation as a healer, my cr has not been impacted as long as the other healer is around my rating it doesn’t matter the mmr of the dps. I imagine, because the healers are given rating based off of each other regardless of the dps in most situations, the dps mmr/cr would function the same way if you’re placed with a healer from another bracket.

what is this math lol, literally where are these numbers coming from

Its people making up arbitrary numbers so they can feel better about their own recent lack of progress.

Man I had the same experience in the hour, once in a while I’ll have a crap game. I had an absolute horrible game, think I was 1-5 and the next match I go 6-0. I’m having a mental battle with this system. I need to take a break and go lvl my priest or something lol.

Gaining rating is literally up to chance. It’s not a good design. Higher rated players really just got matched very luckily on the way up.

I don’t think it does a recal after each round, so you are stuck playing the same MMR each round. Maybe if it changed each match it would be better.

I think its definitely both, it helps to have a good streak on your way up so that your mmr inflates well past your CR. For example I went something like 25 wins 8 losses in my current weeks games, shot me straight up to 2k rating and 2200+ mmr.

If i had an unlucky streak I might have reached my mmr and gotten stuck at that point even with a 50/50 win rate you can become stuck.

Ah, yes. Of course.

Cheers for the correction - I just assumed we play with everyone equally.

I had one the other day where I won 4 and lost a small amount of rating.

Everyone else seemed to get heaps of rating like +100 or more I feel like the system expected me to win 5 to break even and get 6 for points.

I didn’t check the stats of other players but it seemed like decent players using alts.

I honestly dont get how the points are awarded I have won 6 on my healer with a few close shaves and ended up with zero points.

Read my original post, if your current rating is equal to or higher than your matchmaking rating you will have a hard time gaining points until you win consistently in that particular matchmaking bracket.

So for example:

  • your rating 1800
  • your matchmaking 1780
  • you win 4/6 games but gain zero rating

Or

  • your rating 1500
  • your matchmaking 1800
  • you win 1/6 games but gain 50 rating

My 1400 booty climbed to 1950. I’d say that’s solid progress for being as terrible as I am.

You have a firm grasp of the obvious
