Solo Dungeons and Raids WAIT HEAR ME OUT

I really think there should be a solo mode for dungeons and raids for two reasons - basic story progression and, more importantly, giving players a sandbox to play in to learn mechanics before joining the real raids.

The caveat? They should absolutely not drop any gear; that needs to be left to real dungeons and raids.

Even as someone who doesn’t raid I’m not sure this is a great idea. Add to that a lot of those mechanics are designed for multiple players, and many aren’t fixed to be soloable until years later. cough mythic HFC cough

And it would just give more ammo to the ‘solo/lfg/lfr content has destroyed the community’ people that hang around here.

Personally I don’t mind waiting a couple of expansions to see raid environments. It’s even become something I even look forward to with anticipation (finally finished Hellfire Citadel to see the WoD conclusion with my own eyes just a few weeks ago and it was a neat hit of nostalgia).

Dungeons … well, I’m pretty sure I can solo normal now on some characters, but just haven’t gotten around to it except to unlock dark iron dwarves.

If you want to learn your class there is a solo mode already

I’m in favor of this, for the following reasons:

  1. As the OP stated, it gives players a chance to learn the mechanics of a dungeon before they get in there with other players.

  2. It gives players like me, who like to watch cutscenes and read quest text, the chance to do so. Along with this, I like to explore dungeons slowly the first couple of times, look at the architecture, check out the mobs inside, admire the layout, etc. Try doing that in a group sometime.

  3. Some people just play this game solo, and that’s ok. If they want to finish the story of a zone, they should be able to, whether they group up or not.

Of course, as good as this idea is, it’s not very likely the devs will ever even consider it, so it’s really a moot point.

hmm I can see how it would appeal to some but I don’t see many people doing them if there’s no rewards. Although some people might like them just to finish off story lines that end in instances without having to do group. What you’re suggesting is like a proving grounds but in an instance environment.

I’d say doing a run with AI npcs would be better if you want to have some kind of solo mode and just keep the loot in it because you do want to simulate the actual experience in a “real” instance and that means working with other people. Might be doable for dungeons but raids probably would not work.

The lower difficulties are for learning. You can’t usually mess up in LFR or a Normal/Heroic dungeon in a way that causes the group to wipe unless you do it on purpose.

I’d be happy if the raid quests were optional steps in big expansion wide quest lines that have other stuff locked behind them. Fine, keep the fight Jaina quest, but if I don’t raid let me just continue on with the rest of the war campaign (AND my GD Heritage armor quest)

Unless you’re playing a tank. This idea would be awesome for tanks to learn the dungeon before they get in there with all the gogogo kids.

For LFR you might be somewhat right. But usually not. For dungeons, you’re wrong.

Please elaborate?

alternatively, youtube and read the raid guide that’s already in the game telling you all about the fights in detail?

Needing to read up on the fights or go to external sources for info, even though I do it, is still bad game design. The dungeons/raids should teach you how to do the boss mechanics simply by virtue of playing the game, but they dont. Plus, reading up/watching vids is not the same as real experience, so giving some players the ability to practice these mechanics in a sandbox environment would be great imo.

Just go with friends or guildies, then everyone can learn and still get gear.

As an old paper and pencil RPG player, I think having to watch a youtube video of a dungeon before I enter rather ruins the experience.

to finish storylines: in all pro this idea
to learn the fights, not so much… but maybe it’s nice
at the end xpac see people wiping on raids is kinda… amusing

The problem is solo play and group play are very different.

When you are in a group you have to pay attention to what everyone else is doing as well as what the mobs are doing.

I appreciate the thought behind your statement. However, none of my friends still play this game (well, one does, but she defected to the Horde a few months back). They’ve all dropped like flies.

Guilds are another story altogether. Mostly, I find them to be just a place for the GM’s pals to hang out and share a chat channel and a guild bank. The last several guilds I was in, everyone just ran PUG’s and no one ever grouped up for anything.

I’m sorry but I must have been very unclear when I specifically mentioned the in game guide, simply press shift+J and you can see any raid, any boss, any role.

Worst case scenario the run goes kinda slow. Dungeons don’t really have mechanics that tanks can screw up and wipe everyone other than pulling too many groups at once because they got greedy.

Raids rarely do, but tanks swaps can be messed up and such.
