[SOD] Sheath of Light HOT Not Working as Intended

The “healing over time” portion of Sheath of Light doesn’t work as intended. As the tooltip reads, “your critical healing spells heal the target for 60% of the healed amount over 12 sec.” I tested this with Flash of Light and Holy Light:

“Flash of Light heals for 420 (Critical)”
“gains 20 from Sheath of light”
“gains 19 from Sheath of light”
“gains 19 from Sheath of light”
“gains 19 from Sheath of light”

“Holy Light heals for 1303 (Critical)”
“gains 19 from Sheath of light”
“gains 20 from Sheath of light”
“gains 20 from Sheath of light”
“gains 20 from Sheath of light”

As we can tell, the 60% is not in effect. Since those HOT values didn’t seem to be tied to the heal, i looked at the Healing Power (Only showing Flash of Light since the ability didn’t matter).

Healing Power of 98
“Flash of Light heals for 420 (Critical)”
“gains 20 from Sheath of light”
“gains 19 from Sheath of light”
“gains 19 from Sheath of light”
“gains 19 from Sheath of light”

Healing Power of 78
“Flash of Light heals for 322 (Critical)”
“gains 15 from Sheath of light”
“gains 15 from Sheath of light”
“gains 16 from Sheath of light”
“gains 15 from Sheath of light”

Healing Power of 58
“Flash of Light heals for 322 (Critical)”
“gains 12 from Sheath of light”
“gains 12 from Sheath of light”
“gains 11 from Sheath of light”
“gains 11 from Sheath of light”

Healing Power of 0
No combat log is entered and the HOT tooltip shows as “Heals for 0 every 3 seconds”

Pretty big conclusion that this ability doesn’t work as the intended tooltip tells us it should and that it scales directly off +Healing

Edit
After doing a little bit more math, it looks like the HOT portion scales directly off +healing at 60%, and then has a coefficient of 20% (which aligns with the numbers provided above)

Sheath of Light’s heal over time only works on EFFECTIVE healing, not over healing.
This is how it works in Wrath as well.
If you do your tests again on a target that is wounded, you should get the appropriate heal over time amount.

Some strange testing when i tried again taking damage.
Any insight on the differing ticks?
The first one is just over 50% and the second one is just under 80% ticks.

Klomp’s Holy Light heals Klomp for 169.(1224 Overhealed) (Critical)
Klomp gains 365 Mana from Klomp’s Illumination.
Klomp gains 0 Health from Klomp’s Sheath of Light.(52 Overhealed)
Klomp gains 0 Health from Klomp’s Sheath of Light.(52 Overhealed)
Klomp gains 0 Health from Klomp’s Sheath of Light.(53 Overhealed)
Klomp gains 0 Health from Klomp’s Sheath of Light.(52 Overhealed)

Klomp’s Holy Light heals Klomp for 295.(1127 Overhealed) (Critical)
Klomp gains 365 Mana from Klomp’s Illumination.
Klomp gains 0 Health from Klomp’s Sheath of Light.(71 Overhealed)
Klomp gains 0 Health from Klomp’s Sheath of Light.(71 Overhealed)
Klomp gains 0 Health from Klomp’s Sheath of Light.(72 Overhealed)
Klomp gains 0 Health from Klomp’s Sheath of Light.(72 Overhealed)

Think Sheath of Light has a spell power ratio on it as well that just gets added on top of everything? So it isn’t a strict 60%?
Try the test with taking enough damage to have no over healing occur.

Don’t worry Blizz, I’ll necro this thread from 2 months ago to address the total confusion around the asinine way the ability was coded.

There are two contributions to the HoT from Sheath of Light.

First, it is treated as a generic HoT effect, and has its own spell power coefficient that scales off the player’s healing power.

  • The spell power coefficients of HoTs are calculated based upon a normalization factor of 15 seconds.
    • Sheath of Light HoT is 12 seconds, so its SP coefficient is [ 12 / 15 = 0.80 ]

Second, 60% of the effective healing done by the spell crit is added on.

The sum of the two contributions is then divided into 4 parts for the 1 tick every 3 seconds for the 12 second duration.

Worked example from my own testing:

Player’s Total +Healing from gear/effects: 288
Holy Light crit amount healed: 613 effective (1487 overhealing)

From equations above, expected values:
[ 288 * 0.80 ] + [ 613 * 0.60 ] = [ 230.4 + 367.8 ] = 598.2 total —> 4 ticks of 149.6

Observed Sheath of Light ticks: 149/150/150/149 (sum: 598)

Likewise, a healing crit with only overhealing, of any amount, from either FoL or HL, resulted in observed Sheath of Light ticks of 57 or 58, corresponding to the expected 230.4 —> 4 ticks of 57.6

The fact that the largest potential contribution to the HoT is based off of effective healing and not just the raw amount is quite disappointing. The HoT from FoL/Sacred Shield in SoD works off the raw amount; Val’anyr in Wrath works off the raw amount. For how little attention has been given to Holy Paladins in SoD thus far, you’d think they’d throw us a bone.
