SoD - Consider changes to respec fees

Season of Discovery is coming with a lot of cool stuff to find and experiment with. Folks are going to want to play with the different options available to them to see what they like and works best for the way they want to play the game. As I understand it, Runes can be changed freely but I think that talent respec fees might need some additional consideration here.

Traditionally, changing talents in the Vanilla version of the game was not intended to be something done frequently. In order to discourage this, a rather pricey fee is associated with it that increases over time up to a maximum of 50g. After a period of not utilizing respec, the fee will reduce down to a minimum of 15g.

Within the realm of Vanilla WoW’s design, I think this accomplishes the intended goals. However, with SoD, perhaps this will be a bit too prohibitive. Especially considering the initial SoD phase has a level cap of 25, where even the initial fees of 1g and 5g are fairly costsly.

I think it might be worth considering some changes to this… here are a few suggestions that I can think of, but by no means are the only options.

  1. If talents are not meant to be as restrictive in SoD, consider no respec fee at all. This wil allow players to freely experiment with builds and discover what works for them.
  2. If talents are meant to be restrictive, consider allowing the respec fee to grow as it does currently, but then reset back to 1g at the start of every reset. Using this approach, talents will still have meaning and require some commitment, but players still get a bit of flexibility.
  3. Scale the cost of resetting your talents to be something more appropriate for the level 25 cap, then raise it as the phases progress. In this way the intent of the original design is preserved, but the values are appropriate to the level cap of any given phase.

Anyway, those are just my thoughts here. What do others think?

They’ve already mentioned changes to respec costs for the first phase. They didn’t give any specifics though (at least none i’m aware of).

This is a well written post. I hope they consider the changes.

This is in the wrong forum now as I created it before the split, but I wanted to follow up.

It does look like Blizzard has reduced the fees. I’m not sure it scales at the same rate, but the initial respec cost is 10s instead of 1g.

So that’s nice. Thanks, Blizzard

I’m at 50s (I think it’s going up 10s per respec?) but considering respecs to tryout runes I think this discourages the whole point of the rune system.

Leave the talent system as it is but make it respeccable outside of combat, just like on retail. No real reason to make it cost prohibitive anyway.

Go play retail.

whole point of talents is to force you to make a choice :expressionless: if you can just switch whenever, might as well not even have talents. just make them all passives/skills you can train.
