Socket Stingyness

Any idea why the sockets are so limited, both in pve and pvp? Also the gems themselves are very weak. You only get a few and they only provide a minuscule amount of stats. I think most players could skip getting any gems and they wouldn’t notice the difference. Enchants are much stronger, both in stats and the effects they can have by comparison.

I’ve noticed this across the board. It’s been getting worse. Professions suck, archaeology is dead, new content is just a quest chain that says ‘come back in a week’. Blizzard is taking ‘less is more’ to an extreme. Gem socketing used to be a bullet point.

It seems that it’s largely because they plan to add the additional sockets to jewelry, at least in PvE, as we progress in difficulty in each tier. This is why March on Quel’danas is the only place to get anything with two sockets right now.

So, while a rank 2 ring enchant gives 29 stats and a rank 2 gem gives 23, it’s theoretically possible to get 46 in PvE on one ring (and necks don’t have enchants but there’s a 2-socket neck in there too) so I’m pretty sure this is why the gems are where they are. They already had to buff both gems and enchants by nearly double after launch because they were so weak, but I think they’re in a decent spot.

The lack of agency on sockets plus Indecipherable Eversong Diamond actually having more base primary stat also unfortunately nullifies the usefulness of the other three diamond cuts.
