Social contract - Hate speech and Ability

Just read the social contract clause again since it popped up again with the last update and while I generally agree with it one point started me thinking. That point is about hate speech that targets another player’s ability.

Doesn’t that open up a can of worms when it comes to discussing under-performing players in raid/dungeon? If you’re the raid leader and you kick someone with a “sorry you don’t do enough DPS” or “you make too many mistakes in raid” type message are you opening yourself up to sanction under the social contract?

Common sense would say it should only be applied if someone is abusing your lack of ability eg: “your DPS sucks, you play like a toddler” (clean version) not “sorry your DPS isn’t good enough”. But we’ve all seen that common sense isn’t so common.

edit: For anyone coming to this late and not reading the whole thread. As a couple of people have pointed out the word ability in this context probably refers to physical or mental (dis)ability not skill in the game. No need to keep pointing that out.

It does however, suggest that the wording may be open to interpretation as ability can be viewed either way. And therefore that the wording could (should) be clarified somewhat.

Well, first it has to be reported to Blizzard and then they have to read the chat logs.

So if it’s “sorry, we’re hitting enrage and need to replace you” I imagine it would be rather unlikely to get hit.

If it’s “you’re trash, kys” then I wouldn’t be mad if they were let go.

Edit:

I mean this is just like all the other scaremongering irl. I don’t think it’s really worth stressing about being banned for removing someone until it actually starts happening

No. I think deep down you know that.

Sure, that’s what I meant by Common Sense. In a perfect world you wouldn’t even get reported if you were the raid leader and you did that. But as I said, common sense isn’t that common and you know people will report, just because.

Even if they don’t sanction raid leaders, it makes me think that it’s adding another thing for GMs to waste time having to review.

I don’t see the comment as scaremongering, it’s foreseeing potential abuse of the system and wondering whether it’s possible to fix it in advance. Potentially by clarifying the language a little. Heck maybe they could just add a “this is not reportable abuse” example to it.

edit: I meant to add that the flip side of the clause is that it may make raid leaders reluctant to actually discuss issues with players (like poor DPS or standing in fire) in game because they’d be concerned about getting reported.

Also, there are still people being butts in the game even after the “social contract” has been out for a little bit.

Clearly it’s not this omniscient weapon to oppress those who “just say it as they see it”

I joined a normal kelthuzad last week then got handed leader (yay, tanking) and had the absolute joy of pug leading thrust on me.

One bright fellow saw that a healer was lacking (tbh he was) and started demanding I kick people; “they go or I go”.

Since I knew he was going to be drama I opted for the latter, saving time for all of us and letting him go join a better group.

He instantly pulled the boss, wiped us and spent the next hour or two (literally that long) whispering me about how bad I was, how dumb I was, how I’ll never get anything. Constantly checking our progress. Saying that as he was the 2nd highest dps (all our dps except #1 were pretty dang low, him included) and that meant he should have stayed.

He was a total butt clown, a bit of a Karen. But nothing will happen to him because I didn’t report him. It was kinda fun watching him have a meltdown and not recognise his top tier 7k dps or whatever. He got kinda racist against Australians too.

I kept asking him why he was upset that he was no longer in a trash group with trash players but dude was way beyond mad at that point.

Under no circumstances will this ever be enforced.

No, not really. You’ve never been allowed to flame people for their (lack of) performance.

Two hours??

But it’s a nothing burger until we see people getting actioned for it…

The social contract is just a renamed ToS of rules that have been present since 2004. It’s all vague language that covers their butt for any unforeseeable reason so they can ban people and not get in trouble.

As long as you just politely let them know don’t see it being an issue.

What utter nonsense

The previous generation could barely even handle dyed hair without clutching their pearls. But yeah sure whatever its us thats soft

you know how players will get sometimes

It’s about people such as myself who have disabilities that effect our ability to play WoW compared to others primarily able-bodied people

Honestly surprised it’s included though considering Blizzard is obsessed with making everything as inaccessible as possible nowadays

That pretty much falls under the banner of harassment and if it’d gone on for two hours I’d have either put the person on ignore or I would have reported them. It is kind of amusing in a weird way to see just how long they’d remain salty about it, but I think it’d be too distracting. It raises a question of when you should actually report people, but that’s probably better in a different discussion.

@Rashiko: Even if it’s not enforced it still needs to be checked. Which is added time wasting.

True, they can be a little entitled… but as long as there is no evidence in game I doubt any GM would punish.

In another game I had someone who’d report me everyday, and tell me they were, just because I would dance at them when I saw them in the main hub. They were a huge snowflake but I never got any trouble out of it… since I was doing nothing wrong technically.

It’s kind of true. Each generation with the advancement of technology is making us softer physically. With the advent of education and awareness we are becoming more tolerant than the previous generations.

Graduations you are both right.

I even told him that if I reported him out would be straight to ban for him but I wasn’t going to because I wanted to know why he was so mad that he couldn’t come play with the trash players

That actually makes me long for some sort of clause about not abusing the reporting system. “Don’t use the reporting system as a means of punishing another player because you don’t like them for some reason”.

I’d hope that blizzard already track reports per player (by reporter) to see whether they’re spamming reports just to cause trouble.
