A fully upgraded Soar on the Dragon Isles is as fast as dragonriding, and has a cooldown of 1-2 minutes. It still only has one charge of Ascent and one charge of Surge though. It means you launch in the air, use your two skills, glide to the ground, wait a minute, and then hop in their air again. Compared the base drake it’s tedious, which sucks because flying as your Dracthyr is fun.
Soar in the old world is nerfed speed and a cooldown of 3-4 minutes.
Honestly, my suggestion would have been…
*Soar: Acts as a dragonriding mount in any areas with dragonriding enabled. Would share the same vigor pool, cooldowns, and talents as dragonriding proper. Barring that, I would be happy if the cooldown started on use and there was some way to regen your abilities in flight. Or choose which you wanted to use. You know, have three charges of your skills, but you could spend them on any combination of Ascent or Surge.
*Flying Wild: A normal mount ability with a cast time and dismount when normal mounts would dismount. Would launch the Dracthyr up in the air into a hover and would allow them to travel along the ground at mount speed in areas without flight, or fly in the area in areas with flight. Same as any other flying mount in game, but with a Dracthyr skin.
The Dracthyr in the Evoker trailer actually does that. I think it is meant to look like Hover, but it is not that. It has a cast time from Soar, and then it launches them into a Dracthyr flying idle far higher than Hover normally would. Dracthyr actually have full flying mount animations, they are just not available to players.
Either way, only having what essentially amounts to a flying sprint or hop as your only way to fly as yourself kinda sucks. Being stuck on a flying mount while thinking that you would much rather be doing this with your character’s own wings is unfun. They didn’t tell Druids that they could only be in Travel/Flight for a limited amount of time before they were forced out of it before waiting for a cooldown to travel more, nor did they do the same with Worgen’s Running Wild, but they did with Dracthyr and Soar (and didn’t even bother giving us normal flight). It kinda sucks.
