So. You think you know how to mog run, eh?

Note: This is for raids including and post Siege of Org where mythic raid tier was first introduced and we got separate weekly lockouts for each raid difficulty. Raids prior to SoO all share 1 weekly lockout regardless of raid player size or difficulty. So be careful with those!!!111!!

Greetings citizen! I’m here to tell you that, no, you don’t know how. But that’s OK! I’m here to teach you! Yay! :+1:

Legacy Loot:

Did you know? That when you zone into a raid, your chat log will tell you if legacy loot rules have been enabled or not?

Did you know? Legacy loot means LFR, normal and heroic raids and dungeons will always assume you have a maximum compliment of players even if you’re solo? That’s how you get 5 drops per boss in a raid since these difficulties scale to 25 players. But wait! What about mythic I hear you say? Read on my good fellow!

Did you know? Mythic difficulty always scales to 20 players regardless as to whether legacy loot has been enabled for an expac or not? That means that regardless of how many players you bring into a mythic raid that does NOT have legacy loot enabled, you will always get 4 drops per boss! Wowza! But wait! Why only 4 drops instead of 5 like with LFR, normal and heroic tiers? Read on my good fellow!

Did you know? Legacy loot impacts mythic raid instances in only 1 way. And that is it forces it to drop 5 pieces and thus actually scales to 25 players (like LFR, normal and heroic raids can) instead of just 20! Wowza! But wait! What is all this about scaling to players I hear you say?! Read on my good fellow!

So what does this mean!!!111!!1!!

It means that each player who has not killed said boss previously that week on the same difficulty you are running, in a non-mythic raid contributes 20% to the chance an item will drop off a boss! Wowza! So in a normal non-legacy raid instance, a group of 6 players has a 100% chance to have 1 item drop off a boss and a 20% chance for 2 items to drop! Amazing!!!111!!! But of course with a mythic non-legacy raid, you will always get 4 items per boss!!!1!!!1!

So what happens if you group up with other people in a non-mythic raid that have killed certain bosses in a raid on the difficulty tier you are running? Well I’ll tell you! It means that the game basically removes those people from your player total for the effected bosses. So that means if you had 10 players but 2 of them have already looted a particular boss on that difficulty that week, then you will not get the benefit of their 20% contribution. So instead your 10 players gets reduced down to 8 players. So suddenly your guaranteed 2 drops per boss goes down to 1 drop plus 60% for a second piece of loot from the effected boss. So be careful of such players!

Play Smart!

So, if you don’t want to completely waste your time, never run a LFR/normal/heroic non-legacy loot enabled raid with less than 10 players (the more the merrier!) so that you ensure you will always get at least 2 items drop per boss! Wowza! Amazing!!1!!1!111! You could run with less if you’re happy with mostly only getting 1 item per boss I guess but…ewwww, gross! :face_vomiting: And of course if you solo’d a non-legacy, non-mythic raid boss, you’d only get 20% chance of having 1 item drop!!!1111!!! Ewwwwww!!!11 Yucky!!!1 :face_vomiting: Basically running a non-mythic, non-legacy raid with less than 5 players gives you the distinct possibility of getting NO LOOT AT ALL from a boss. :scream:

Loot Lockouts? What are they?

Did you know, all raids including and after Siege of Org have seperate weekly lockouts per difficulty? That means that you can run the same raid on each difficulty (4) during the same week!

Raids prior to SoO do not make this distinction however and thus mean that running any of these older raids is treated as all 1 lockout for that week! So if you run ICC on normal, you won’t be able to run ICC in heroic that same week!

Did you know? Whilst all raid difficulties have weekly lockouts, LFR, normal and heroic raid tiers do NOT care about your raid ID and thus you can keep going back with whichever different players you want during the same week!!!1!!!1 It just means you will only get loot from those bosses you haven’t killed yet in that week!!!11!!! Wowza! But wait, what is is a raid ID? What about mythic raids I hear you say? Read on my good fellow!

Raid ID

Did you know? Unlike LFR, normal and heroic raid difficulties, mythic raid difficulties utilise your raid ID (a week long unique identifier/hidden number assigned to you and everyone in your group when you zone into a raid) to lock you into playing with only those groups of players!!!1!1!!1!! What all this means is that whilst you can keep going back with different players during a week for the LFR, normal and heroic difficulties, you CANNOT for mythic difficulty!!!111!!1 Oh noes!!11!!!

What does this mean???!!?!?!! It means that if you join a group and zone into a mythic raid (regardless as to whether it’s legacy or not), if you leave that group for any reason after killing any bosses and fail to clear the entire raid, you CAN’T go back in that same week to finish it off with different group later!!!1!!! You will be locked out and prevented from zoning into the raid on mythic for that week (until your lockout expires)!!!111!!! Oh noes!!!11!!! :scream: Is there really no way around this??? Read on my good fellow!

A way around this:

Did you know? Whilst you may be locked to a certain mythic raid ID after killing only a certain number of bosses, you CAN go back and kill the bosses you failed to kill IF 3 things happen:

  1. The original mythic raid group you were in do NOT kill any more bosses without your presence (as those bosses will be counted as dead for you regardless as to whether you actually participated in the kill or not).
  2. You create a new group as the lead and invite only people who are NOT locked to a mythic raid ID for that week!
  3. Those people you invite with no lockouts accept your lockout (as presented by an on-screen prompt they will receive) upon zoning into the mythic raid. This means if you kill 3 bosses in a 10 boss raid on mythic, the other non-locked players will have to accept that they will not kill nor be able to get any loot from those 3 bosses for that week. Essentially they will get “saved” to your lockout and the game will treat it as if they already killed those bosses even though they actually didn’t.

Wowza! You made it to the end! Now you know how to be a pro mog runnner!!1!111!!! Amazing! Good job! High five! :+1:

Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

Adding on, there is also a 10 player setting for legacy raids (for getting those ten player achievements) and those always drop 2 pieces of gear. Another thing is that it seems you can’t run 10 player and 25 player of the same difficulty (heroic 10 and heroic 25 for example) on the same character in the same week.

Another thing I would like to add is that each player who has not killed that boss that week on that difficulty adds 20% for non-legacy raid drops. So for example if you have an 8 person group doing SoD heroic, but 2 of those 8 people killed the boss already that week on the same characters, there are 6 people are eligible for loot, and cannot trade gear loot to the other two, and there will be one drop with a 20% chance for a second drop.

Yes. This was primarily about raids post the MoP change. But you are right for older raids prior to Siege of Org. Basically the game treats 10 and 25 player difficulties as 1 combined lockout that also includes all raid difficulties (in this case, normal and heroic since I think LFR and mythic didn’t exist at that time?). Kinda annoying and lame but there we have it. So be sure to select your raid difficulty and number of players for older raids than SoO carefully! You will only get 1 shot per week!!!111!!! :scream:

All Classic and Burning Crusade raids and the first raids in WOTLK (Naxxramas, Vault of Archavon, Obsidian Sanctum, Eye of Eternity, Onyxia’s Lair, and Ulduar) and (interestingly) Baradin Hold from Cataclysm have normal mode only. I believe there is LFR for Dragon Soul from Cataclysm onwards. I advise choosing 25 player mode for more loot unless you are specifically targeting achievements from the 10-player modes.

Ah yes. You are right. LFR is older than mythic. Regardless, the game still treats them under all one weekly lockout. So be careful out there!

I wish they removed weekly lockouts on legacy raids and just let people run them as much as they wanted on the same character. For now, my alt army is ready!

Good point I forgot to mention. I will add that in to the OP.

I miss the period in WoD where all EK dungeons had personal loot.

Made targeting Tmog so much easier.

Thanks, Trust! This is a great thread! Bookmarked. :dracthyr_heart:

Would it make sense to add some type of “mog” currency to current dungeons/raids (lfr, normal, heroic, mythic) that could be used to buy the old gear from past expansions? My thought is to add more reasons to play the current content. Just another option for the mog-endgame.

It would be nice. But here’s where things get even more complicated:

  1. Some raids do have vendors you exchange a token for to acquire set tier gear.
  2. Some raids (notably the ones from SL and DF) utilise the catalyst system instead of actually dropping everything in the raid. That means there’s certain class mogs as part of your set you will never be able to get unless you get an eligible piece of loot of the same slot from the raid and then catalyse it for the missing mog! SoFO is the main offender here. :face_with_symbols_over_mouth: This means you need to be super careful about gear you think you already have because that cloak you already have the mog of may unlock mog you don’t actually have from the catalyst.
  3. Some super old raids from TBC require you to also obtain other gear before you can purchase set tier.
  4. Some raids utilise an upgrade currency system to get different raid tier mogs (ICC for example).

I was farming for a pair of pink and yellow boots. It took so long for them to drop that I collected an entire separate green BOE tmog set. Pray what you need isn’t a BOE green.

Thank you for typing up this helpful and informative post.

In that case, I hope we start seeing the old content get streamlined to a new standard once it’s no longer the current expansion. Safe to say that’s the end game for a lot of people now.

I read this in a used car salesmen voice and it was pretty entertaining.
