Newer the server is the more unstable the population will be in times to come, it’s risky business unless you are a solo/small group player.
Honestly, I’m operating under the belief that in 3 months around 40% to 50% of the players who actually log-in to Classic the first week will have stopped using it. I think there is a pretty big chunk of people who are only checking it out because it’s free and they already are using retail. I don’t expect that many of those people to actually stay.
If 50% of a ‘medium’ server leaves that probably will put it into what Blizzard considered a medium server previously.
I hope I turn out to be wrong and only 10-20% of people playing WoW Classic the first week quit within 3 to 6 months, but I’d rather be on a server with queues initially that gets slightly better later on and have a healthy population 6 months from now than get no queues next week and be on a server 6 months from now with a much lower population.
Honestly, my fingers are crossed that the data can be mined at launch or shortly after.
New servers are too little, too late.
I already created our guild website and discord server. No way I’m doing all that over again. Not to mention the name reserve lottery.
30-50k per server.
Let’s go low, so 30k. 50% quit, so thats 15k after layering, thats still too large for one layer.
30k, 80% quit = 6k. 6k is still two times the old classic servers. Still a population so large for one layer it could be really bad for the game.
With the amount of people they have, the problem is not dying servers, it’s overcrowded servers.
Also dying servers can be merged together. Overcrowded servers are much harder to fix because you can’t force people off, only offer server transfers.
If they release a normal EST server, I definitely am switching.
Off topic, I am also concerned that some of the classic world bosses will become far more heavily contested than they were back when Vanilla was out. Remember, they are on a weekly spawn and can only get tapped by one group of 40. That isn’t me saying to change anything about the respawn rate etc. That is me saying that with such heavy server populations, those world bosses will be almost impossible to hit.

They did, it is the Westfall server. It will be live Monday.
Eastfall for west coast coming later
If between now and launch time if there is some sort of guarantee that the launch day realms will have a healthy population, I will switch to Old Blanchy. However I don’t see how that can possibly be predicted before launch. The reddit poll is very useful but the new realms were posted too close to Monday.
I am also assuming that I will probably never touch World Boss loot during Classic due to overcrowded server populations, lengthy spawn times, and the single 40-man raid tag.
Worst case if the q’s are too long on Pagle (SP?) and I can’t get my names on Westfall I’ll just unsubscribe.
If there are queues on all the servers of a certain rule-set, they’ll launch another realm.
Not me!
2 years of trauma 2006 2007 and part 2008 have traumatised me enough to never even want to take a chance on anything other than a full realm ever again.
I have patience for queues, but zero patience to be stuck on a low pop realm where everyone has been in every guild like a merry go round.
Yeah, I just saw that post and was pretty happy about it. I will be switching at 12pm 8/26 for sure. Though I am still concerned given how quickly the east cost servers seem to fill up. Gotta make the swap and see how it goes though first. Maybe the 1 new EST server is enough and I am golden
If Old Blanchy was a PvP realm, I would play there in a heartbeat.
What an awesome name.

Something worth noting is that even a “Low” status realm for Classic will have more then a “Full” status Vanilla realm did. I totally see your point, just letting you know in case you didn’t.
Sadly lots of folks didn’t know, and Blizz should have been a tad better at communicating that fact. People might be more likely to want to swap. I’d be down with a Classic server at “Medium” pop, because that shizz will already be off the hook.
fighting for names
I mean… I got all my names?
The names I have reserved no one ever chooses anyway so shrug i could of just waited till launch to get my names and be fine.
I have names reserved on Mankrik but will probably move to Westfall tomorrow. I wish they would go ahead and open up the new servers for name reservations.
How do you get server population information to know if it’s 50/50?
Newer the server is the more unstable the population will be in times to come, it’s risky business unless you are a solo/small group player.
That might be true. However, it depends on how many people flopp off pvp servers after they realize what they are like.
Due to queue concerns, anyone in that group would flee to the new pve servers.
