So who here is playing with a controller

I wanna know how it is. I’m preparing for my journey with a steam deck and about to do Xbox controller training in game

Who’s done it, who does it and who’s gonna do it

Might even start a guild

Controller Folk Youtoobers

I only play with a controller. I have wrist problems in my left hand and WASD start to hurt really bad after about 30 minutes. It works really well actually. It’s gonna depend on the class obviously but I use it for sub rogue, fury warrior, and havoc dh and it’s great. It’s kind of a pain to setup but super fluid once you get it how you want it.

I have dreams where I play with a controller and it’s always super stressful and hard to do. :man_shrugging:

Well if you can play fury warrior and havoc DH then in happy. I want to learn to use controller for farming stuff on my off time using the deck using my warriors and monks

This is my setup on a Xbox controller

Left stick-movement
Right stick-camera
“Select”- escape
“Start”- tab
LT-shift
LB- control
A-spacebar
Clicking the left stick=left click
Clicking right stick=right click
Then X, Y, B, RT, RB, and all d pad directions are all mapped to abilities.
With the modifiers mapped this gives me over 30 keybinds.

For how cheap storage is nowadays I am really disappointed in the base sizes the steam deck comes in. 64gb for the lowest price? $400?

I don’t use a console controller for wow . I have a gaming key pad for that .

With that said I do have xbox controller for other games and with the right combinations I could key bind more spells then my key pad does .

The keypad has 25 buttons that includes pressing down on the thumb stick . Each button is a single keybind where you really can’t so button combos .

The xbox controller has

  • pad (each direction counting as a button)
    4 buttons (x) (y) (a) (b)

2 thumbsticks that press down counting as 2 more

4 buttons on the front of the controller.

This comes to a total of 14 buttons.

Here is where there is a problem with controllers (well at least in the minds of some people) . They see only the 14 buttons they can visualize and not take into account that the controllers are actually set up for multiple button combos that increase the number of keybinds possible .

THere are a possibility of 50 + button combinations that includes the original 14 buttons that you visually see on the controller .

The only thing people need to do is remember what buttons and combos do what . No different then we already do remembering what keyboard buttons and combos do what .

(note ) My key pad controller has both my standard keyboard and shift + keys bound to it .

Screen shotted.

This sounds perfectly logical I’m gonna give it a whirl

Edit- I probably would have set up RB or RT as control with the opposite button in left as shift.

I’m gonna try your way

Get the consoleport add on and then it’s super easy to switch that stuff around. I think default is RB and LB as modifiers but I prefer using LB and LT.

They’re probably hoping people would pop in a microSD card.

64gb and an APU based machine for $400. Lol 530$ if you get 256gb and a case? What a joke.

My issue with playing with a controller is turn speed.
How do you compete with a mouse?

I’ll be honest I don’t think turn speed is much of an issue in an mmo.

However in shooters I agree

Brb having a panic attack.

I frequently hold a controller in my left hand and use the left side of it instead of a keyboard, with my right hand on the mouse and keyboard

and then sometimes i’ll use the entire controller when i can just mash a macro for my rotation and not worry about being optimal (which is honestly a ton of wow activities)

when i first started wow in vanilla i used a controller entirely, but after getting more into pvp I eventually switched to a hybrid because i needed the mouse accuracy and speed

nowadays after playing wow for so long, i find rotations incredibly boring and just want to simplify them as much as possible - they are no longer entertaining ever except the occasional timed cooldown usage

but yeah, you can use a controller in this game just fine - done it for years and hit some relatively high ratings and done mythic raiding a bit - always with a controller in my left hand and often both hands on the controller

The whole reason I switched to computer games a long time ago is because I didn’t want my hands to fell tied or handcuffed like they are with a game controller.

new diablo 4 has controller support on pc

controllers are desired by a huge chunk of players instead of being tethered to a desk, and game are easily designed to accomodate them

It’s actually the opposite once you have your setup down and the muscle memory kicks in.

rubs eyes

Huh? What? Who woke me up? How long have I been sleeping here?

Well, guess I’ll get back to my Korthia dailies.

Yep, can’t wait!
