So what other MMOs are y'all playing?

To folk who know things about ESO;

I made the mistake of trying to build raw heals on my first character, is it expected that I feel so grossly squishy all the time and are there any good places for stat / ability breakdowns?

“Raw Heals” please explain for further assistance.

Oh! I play a healer, but I don’t feel squishy,
Try and use a couple heavy armor pieces for the bonus.

Sorry, poor phrasing. No defensives, little armor bonuses, almost exclusively heal spells across the board.

Which is, you know, pretty dumb in it’s own right. I just never expected my health to yoyo so violently against average world mobs. Like, even picking up the ward spell later game it doesn’t seem to absorb much.

I may try that inevitably, I just focused heavily on making all my magicka gooder with light armor and enchants. Plus the nature of drops slash quest rewards. Does a bit of armor make that much different you think?

Probably not a massive difference, but maybe enough?
What class are you?

Templar, is that the name? The sun/fire/healing one.

Ohh me to!
I just use a single heavy helm, last I checked.

But I don’t think going full Light armor is a bad idea either. Then again, I don’t play very much so I’m not the most knowledgeable.

I just kind of wing it and it’s worked so far.

I’m surprised you’re having trouble, Magplar - even healer - is pretty solid n’ tanky. Is your entire bar set up as healing? Are you doing RStaff / RStaff as weapon?

I’d have to log back in and check it out but I’m pretty sure I’ve been carrying a Destruction Staff secondary for some damage options.

It’s entirely possible it’s just a perception issue, I don’t necessarily know I’m struggling beyond it feeling like my health dips fairly sharply (and snaps back twice as quickly). It could be functioning entirely as expected.

It’s also been a while since I played last so I’ll have to update and run around to get a renewed feel.

Make sure it’s a lightning staff, they’re pretty nifty!
I feel that one.
Each time I come back it feels like I need to relearn my setup.

Should probably mention it here too, but an XIV Cross-World Linkshell has been made. If you need an invite send a /tell or friend request to me there. Name is Sheila Irifin.

So the 500 foot overview I can offer without too-too many details - so apologies if some of these are redundant - is as follows:

  • Having healed the “hardest content” at least one time each, I can say having a full rack of heals is overkill, you’ll find the 4 you like the most and can spread them across both bars.
  • The Heavy Armor passives to restore health/magicka/stamina on hit while soloing or doing PvP will end up being about as much regen as light armor passives.
  • If you like the sound of heavy armor but want to be wearing robes or a tunic or whatnot, you can “transmog” different armor weights over one another.
  • If you don’t like the sound of heavy and/or don’t want to transmog, try dropping a point on “Annulment” in Light Armor, it gives you, basically, a Power Word: Shield on demand regardless of your class.
  • Magplar has some seriously nasty damage spells, you don’t even really need to use a Destruction Staff with all the beams, burns, sunbursts, and javelins and could do Resto/Resto if you like.
  • The game has global scaling which is a blessing and a curse. On the one hand, it means you can go anywhere, do anything, and still get an approximate challenge. On the other hand, it means you’re “judged” by your gear infinitely more often and if you’re wearing a bunch of junk you’ll feel it and you’ll feel it FAST. Inversely when you’re running around in full Epic/Legendary gear you can solo dungeons and pull entire swathes of the map without effort.
  • Damage IS very spike-y if you’re not built as a tank. What you describe of “Get butt kicked, put butt back together” sounds normal to me.

That’s a great rundown and I appreciate it, if it is effectively normal that just means opening more space for damage and control tools and thinking on it that way makes a world of difference.

Games with a lot of wide customization variety in ganeplay tend to confuse my feeble brain so I could easily have over/underthought the whole thing.

If it helps they’ve also got a few different archetypal build recommendations built into the skill window.

I don’t know how optimal those are at all because I made my character a year ago and am stuck with an old build/skills but they seem to be reasonable enough for general use.

I’m with you there. When I first got into ESO after a decade of WoW I definitely had the sense of “If I can be everything… that means I can dO EVERYTHING AT ONCE” and tried to make a weird hybrid that just sucked at all three roles.

They’re the only character I’ve ever deleted out of shame because I didn’t want the reminder of how much of a dumbnut I was.

The “Skills Advisor” is what you’re referring to it and it is actually kind of amazing for an MMO. Even though there are build websites out there and debates about what’s better and lots of “Advanced” opinions and options I’ve personally dungeoned/PvPed/raided alongside people who just picked from that window without issue.

Yes, that’s exactly it. I don’t think it was around when I was last playing, and while I was eventually able to muddle through it I do kind of wish it had been to skip at least some of the painful learning process. I’m not exactly an optimal player so it would’ve been fine for me, most likely.

Personally I review the builds on Alcasthq.com and customize from there.

Have you seen his “So You Don’t Want To Obsess Over Endgame” builds? What a guy. He got sick of people trying to use his work as “Oh if you’re not using THE Alcast meta build you’re trash” as a means to bash other people so he started making non-meta builds to kind of encourage people to do exactly what you do with them.

The infection spreads.

Yeah, its one of the reason I love that site. All the builds are so customizable (especially if your not doing anything high end)

I use:

https://alcasthq.com/eso-stamina-necromancer-build-pve/

As a base and swap out skills here and there along with 4 piece sithis set and a 3 piece something else that I’m not remembering at the moment.

I recently got back into SWTOR. Mostly on a whim one night while playing Jedi Academy and feeling that old Star Wars itch. Kinda…fell back down the rabbit hole after that. Basically restarted my entire character list from scratch because so much had changed lol. And then started coming up with ideas for new characters I rolled up. It’s been super fun and reminded me how much I loved the stories they wrote for it.
