So... what happened to Prot Warrior?

Dusted off my ole’ Warrior alt the past 2 nights, so far just taking it easy and gearing up slowly. Currently 173, but my goodness it seems to struggle with threat.

Any different talent builds I can try to help with the threat situation? I’m just using the “recommended” cookie-cutter Icy Veins build at the moment.

I dunno, class just doesn’t feel the same, feels… somehow worse than before. It feels gutted, I can’t quite put my finger on it. In BFA it was an aggro-magnet, I almost never remember losing threat in big pulls.

Now in Shadowlands, I was surprised that I’m suddenly seeing “losing threat” alert messages + “yellow” mob frames appearing all over the place in dungeons :man_shrugging:

All tanks are having to do a bit more work to hold threat right now. Warriors I think have it better honestly. We have been given an aoe taunt now for emergency situations. I find thunderclap and revenge to be plenty to get threat though. I use taunt to grab any mobs that aren’t hit.

It just seems their are more mobs this expansion that do not group up and some mobs that intentionally run away from the tank or fixate.

Mark your targets and kill order. The biggest issue with threat is that if each dps is on a different target, you’re going to have a bad time. Marking your targets will allow everyone to focus and your TC and Rev will be more than enough to hold everything else.

If you don’t have a nameplate addon get one, they will change colors based on threat and is a great way to see if something is getting close to being pulled.

Use revenge more. I know the previous rotation was all TC, TC and then TC some more and use revenge to dump rage. But tossing a Rev or 2 during initial pulls will really help with threat gen.

Yes, right now Prot is having to at least work a little to keep threat. That’s pretty standard for any new xpac, heck even with some new raid tiers, but always gets easier and more fluid as you get gear. Besides, always remember that it could be worse. This could be Vanilla and you have to sunder each target before dps can start, or even better TBC when your TC was capped at 4 targets and you needed to spread your rends to maintain threat lol.

I didn’t check what you’re running. But nobody pulls threat from me when I lead with a ravager as I charge. Dragon roar is insane snap agro. Challenging shout now if things get messy. They reduced the base threat tables for all tanks, but we got a couple nifty tools and aren’t locked into the same talents now. Try something different.

He’s having the same issues as I am though, I was a classic tank, and sundering each target was smooth because the pacing was known. Up until recently the pace was, CHAIN PULL HARDER NOOOOOOOOBBBBB, and it seem slike they’re trying to go back to the days of actually knowing which mob to focus and kill order. That doesn’t work when you’ve built a game around facerolling your keyboard for 6+ straight years.

It’s only a faceroll in trivial content.

This is true.

But to my point, I feel like this every xpac. That’s one of the things about being a tank. It’s usually our responsibility to set the pace and mark the targets. So if you’re with a group that is just doing whatever they want 1) Ask them to assist you and kill the marked targets in that order or 2) if they don’t listen then get a new group.

Press revenge more. ez threat.

Revenge is no longer an ability to use when proc only. Use it ALL THE TIME. I traded out devaste for the auto attack ability, and use revenge as my dump/filler now. I don’t seem to have that much of an issue holding threat as long as I have rage.

Prot warriors are blood terrible in M+ right now. From kings of BFA s4 to mere pawns in shadowlands S1.

Go check the top 100 m+ tank rankings. 75+ DH there, many prot paladins, 1 warrior.

I’ve seen prot pallies just run in with chain silence and mongo the hell out of 7+ mythic dungeons. Meanwhile I’m kiting packs in 5’s and 6’s to survive. Except our threat sucks, so you don’t have the GCD’s to start kiting without a misdirect or tricks.

Warriors who are telling you its a skill issue are avoiding the underlying problem, DH/Prot pally are incredibly powerful for M+ right now.

What about bear and monk? You didn’t mention them at all. I am seeing mostly port pally, Bear tanks, blood DK and then prot warrior. Haven’t had a monk tank yet……

I did a M+3 earlier and wow… even at 185 I was getting my butt kicked. I think I need to invest in never surrender instead of indominitable. The 1% heal just aint enough, whereas I can pretty much keep IP up the entire fight. Also probably gonna switch to bolster.

This is how it is early on with every expansion. Warriors are very gear dependent, but always rise to the top once we start getting better gear. The days of going afk tank are over due to the runners referenced above. People are only gravitating to noob classes like paladin, dh and blood because they aren’t as gear dependent. Use this time to get better at tanking and when other classes peak out we’ll be the gods again

Kind of funny, I dusted off Prot last night and went into a low key, outhealed the healer that needed a drink after every pack and then decided to leave after the 2nd boss. The experience reminded me of why I quit doing it as a pug player.

From my small experience tanking half of a key on my Warrior this expansion I can’t agree with this completely. The damage profiles in M+ require healers to be decent at healing currently and we just had an expansion where healers got free rides into higher keys because they were there for damage for 3 seasons or so and their healing (with a few exceptions) was inconsequential.

My only point being on his Prot Warrior he is going to require healing and there are a lot of healers that can’t even keep up with the minor maintenance he would need in a key even as low as a 3. My guess is in a 3 key, kicks aren’t going out and stuns aren’t being rotated or used properly. I might go so far as to say a 3 may be harder than a 9 already from a tank perspective.

Oh, you’re absolutely right.

Just pay attention next time you’re doing dungeons, it’s like they were intentionally made so that you have nowhere to break LoS when pulling, and almost every pack has either fixates, casters, or those annoying mobs leaping away from you all the time.

They want you to keep running around trying to catch loose mobs nonstop this expansion.

Why they think this is fun gameplay, though, is beyond me.

You can’t do anything about the fixate or leaping mobs. You let them do their thing and they come running back to you. It’s a distraction.

You should be able to see threat on name plates. At least I do with ElvUI.

Ugh. Triggered me.
