So was Deathwing actually retconned out of Warcraft 2?

Maybe this was answered already but here goes…

I’ve played Warcraft since 1 and I remember in 2 that Deathwing supposedly helped the Horde and you even fight him in one human board and use him in an orc board. But since Legion they seemed to state he had been imprisoned in Deepholm until Catacalysm.

Is this to suggest Deathwing never physically appears in Warcraft 2? Would it make more sense now to think perhaps Nefarian, Sabellian or someone else was in his place at that time?

I think that depends on whenever they say he was imprisoned in Deepholm in Cata.

Legion seems to state that Huln Highmountain imprisoned him all the way back in the War of the Ancients which is 10000 years before Warcraft 1 so that is why I wonder if Deathwing’s appearance in 2 is no longer canon.

Good point. If Legion said Deathwing was imprisoned for 10,000 years in Deepholm, either you’re right about the retcon or you found a plot hole.

No he is still involved in the second war. He found a way to break out of deepholm just without destroying the world pillar

He does appear in WC2: BtDP after all.

Deathwing retreated to Deepholm to recover after his loss in Day of the Dragon. Which itself was a retcon since Night of the Dragon has him in the deepest levels of Grim Batol, manipulating his prime consort from the shadows.

Really? Darn. That’s what you get with writers averse to consistency.

I think he was just banished from his old lair in Highmountain and was somehow unable to return there specifically. At least that’s how I interrupted the scene.

to many writers and not enough lore knowledgeable workers at blizzard

Before Cata, there was a bunch of speculation about where Deathwing was. Some people said he was in Outland. Then we went to Outland and he wasn’t there. I don’t think it was until Cata that he had an actual location.

Its one of these things like ogres on Kalimdor that moved around somehow.

Nah Night of the Dragon, in its final chapter said Deathwing was hiding in the shadows within Grim Batol. Manipulating Sinestra into creating the Twilight Dragonflight without her knowledge.

However when Cata was announced, he was hiding in Deepholm following Day of the Dragon instead. Chronicles vol 1 still has him in Deepholm but still manipulating Sinestra via ‘whispers’ in her head.

Night of the Dragon was released around Wrath and takes place before Wrath. In fact it was released 5 days after Wrath was officially released.

I see. I remember people thinking he was going to be in burning crusade though

If they were, it’s probably because of the little event thing that happens on the netherwing island, where Sinestra comes around, says some stuff, and mentions Deathwing. That and Sabellion being around certainly hinted at more Black Flight stuff coming down the road, so I can see why some people took that to mean Deathwing would show up in TBC. It was the very first expansion and all, so nobody really knew what to expect.

But I don’t think anything ever directly implied Deathy would be showing.

Deathwing’s trip to Deepholm from Huln wasn’t permanent, he was able to leave. Back in Cata, one of Therazane’s sons said he had been there several times and they knew him. So it was somewhere he could just go to and from, probably due to being Earth Warder.

The most recent Second War depiction we have (Chronicle) has Deathwing still participating.

That would cause a LOT of plot holes because good ol’ Neltharion was pretty busy guy during that time and did a lot of different things. My understanding is that he didn’t return to Deepholm until after the events of Day of the Dragon.

Deathwing never helped anyone but himself.

What you’re conflating is the enslavement of the Red Dragonflight by use of the Demon Soul on the Red Queen. The Horde forced the Red Flight to serve as their mounts and aerial artillery during tthe Second War.

Deathwing himself had been masquerading as Lord Prestor manipulating the nobility of Alteraac. His brood were doing likewise in Lordaeron and Stormwind.

It’s funny how that little event can stick with people. I remember exactly the moment you are talking about, and you described it pretty much how I remember it.

That always made me think something was planned for the Netherwing that would develop later…. but they weren’t ever mentioned until this Expac.

Deathwing helped Ner’zhul’s Horde during the events of Beyond the Dark Portal. He might’ve done it purely so he could get access to Draenor so he could hide some Black Dragon eggs, but he still let them use his dragons as mounts in the book and even guarded I believe the Skull of Gul’dan.

Oh god, I forgot about this conversation, this was one of THE hot topics in the Cata days: fixing the weird Deathwing timeline. Interesting how it just disappeared, in hindsight…

Didn’t everyone eventually settle on him using that one random Titan waygate in Deepholm to sneak out when need be, or something silly like that, because it was the only thing the lore community could get to reasonably work?

Random fun fact about cata, before it came out there was a leak that said it was Azshara causing the world changes.

I kinda believe Blizzard decided on the villain later. Most content is just elements and cultists. Completely villain agnostic and there is a bunch of water stuff like the underwater zones where Naga attack you.

Shall I present you a manga series involving the netherwings and the novel Night of the Dragon?
