I just ordered a Tartarus v2 keypad, so I decided to resub in order to get the mapping all done in a comfortable format. I’ve struggled with remapping my keyboard so I figured maybe a keypad will be different. Does anyone have any experience with the Tartarus v2 Keypad? Is there a optimal setup for this? I had thought about the orbweaver but the Tart v2 was on sale on a 40% off tag so it was super cheap. I am hoping this will make me feel more comfortable playing in group content in shadowlands.
I have used an older and simpler version in the past and set it up to aid in movement using the thumb joystick, and remap some keys to CTRL, SHIFT and ALT to give me access to the other action bars with 1 to = being on the g600 mouse.
The remainder of the keys were useful for selecting targets and other utility stuff.
I tried having the multi button mice before. Doesn’t work for me, i always push the wrong keys. I’m thinking maybe the keypad might be more comfortable for me. A lot of the times with the mouse I tried I would end up wasting my interrupt cd or accidently use a skill like blink/death grip ect. Idk, something about the mice like that just feel clunky and uncomfortable.
Next time just download a program to remap every key on your keyboard to “MASS REPORT PERSON WHO DOESN’T AGREE WITH ME”
it will save you some money.
Why would I do that? I only report people who are offensive. Different opinions only help me grow. Even when I don’t agree, I always learn something.
Never used the Tartarus but I have used the Belkin it is based off and currently use a Logitech G13.
What I do for keybinds is I use Bartender to set up my first four bars to mimic the layout of the keypad. Then I use the keypad software to assign the first ten keys to 1-0 then the second ten to alt1-0 and what ever is left to cnrl1-0. Then I just use the in game keybinds to bind the key on the bars to the corresponding keys on the keypad. After that I slot the skills/macros I want, where I want to the bars. It works as a good generic set up that I can copy to all my toons. I find the buttons on the in game bars visually corresponding to the buttons on the keypad really helped me to acclimate to using it more easily.
I usually use the thumbstick/dpad and mouse for moving. But if you prefer to use wasd, you could just work them in where you want in the keypad software and avoid those spots when slotting skills.
This works for me, but you might find it not to your liking. Best I advice I can really give is to try everything and find out what works for you. Just don’t be afraid to use the keypad software.
Do you know how common it is for the keypad software to get you a ban for third party software? I have heard horror stories in the past with such software causing issues because it can be used for complex macros.
I ask seriously not rhetorically because, I honestly don’t know if this is common or just rumor mill scare tactics.
I have a Tartarus V2. Being left-handed, it is easier for me to use is when playing any game. But when playing WoW, all my keys are bound per my liking and I don’t need to use the keyboard at all. It is a very good investment. I hope you enjoy it.
Honestly I hope so, It should be here in a few days. I’m anxious, even though it was on sale it was still a hefty price tag. I don’t generally like spending that level of money on simple tools to enhance my gaming experience. I rather the money be spent on games itself.
I use an older Orbweaver which is similar except for the wheel. I bind the keys in lots of 4. So bottom 4 from the left are 1,2,3,4 next 4 above 5 6 7 8, next 9 0 - = . Then along the top and side assorted useful keys like mount, space, tab etc. Thumb button generally the emergency one. And keypad lever if you need another set, but tbh, I find that the worst feature of the gamepad, its a bit sketchy.
I’ve never had any problems and I’ve been using keypads for more than a decade now. Just keep anything you do in the keypad software simple. If you can’t do it in a macro in game, don’t do it in the software. Other than the ALT and CTRL modifiers all the macros I use are in game macros.
I am positive you are going to like it. And I won’t worry about third party software. Well, at least I don’t use any. Just do everything the way I intended to play. But I can almost guarantee you, you will really like the Tartarus.
I bought the Tartarus V2 and returned it because it destroyed my hand. The thing was just too big for me. That said, it did look pretty awesome.
I’ll leave you with one advice that I got from Hazel’s stream: If you throw a keypad at your existing characters, it’s gonna take a hell of a lot to get used to it because you’re gonna be fighting years of muscle memory. Instead, try making a new character from scratch, so you map your keys as you go and you develop your muscle memory from zero.
While I couldn’t try it myself, it does sound like good advice. Hope it works out for you!
You’ll probably love it. I have an ancient Saitek pro gamer command unit. It’s pretty much the same thing, but with one less thumb toggle stick thing and a shift key under your palm.
I basically map mine to match the keyboard, and I added 4 extra buttons to the thumb toggle stick for the various forms.
Been running one since wrath. Started with the n52te…which i still have, now using the v2. It will definitely take some getting use to thats for sure, but its way better than using a keyboard imo. Pair it with a naga or similar mouse and outside of functions like map, bag and other random functions I dont use a keyboard.
I can not play without it. Absolutely the best peripheral I own.
Top row for me goes mostly unused since its so far away but I will put non essential things up there. Top row middle key is always bound to escape for exiting menus.
Rows 2 and 3 are my abilities. I lay my bars out so I have the same number of bar slots that match my key layout. So I have 10 bar slots on the left, and to the right I have Shift+key on the right so 20 quickly accessible abilities total.
Bottom row is menus I access often. Map, mount up, character menu, inventory, and jump as my middle key on the bottom row. I standardize this layout across all my games to help muscle memory.
Noooo It was destroyed in shipping. Was suppose to be here today but I got a email saying it got destroyed in shipping and they are sending another.
