I don’t like using many addons, specially ones that changes the UI.
However, since barbed shot puts a buff on the pet (that we have to mantain to optimize DPS) there’s no way to track it easily unless I put my pet as a focus target. But then I’d lose a regular focus target.
AFAIK no other class/spec have an issue similar to this.
Am I’m missing something? Can I easily track the pet’s frenzy buff without the help of an addon?

You’re correct. It’s not easy to track without an addon. But you don’t need an addon that changes your UI.
I use Tellmewhen and customized my own icon for frenzy. It’s really easy to use. You can also just download a frenzy tracking weakaura that’s fully set up. Neither of those addons will change any of your UI, they just add icons on your screen and you can move them around and resize them.
Alternatively, you can always take Thrill of the Hunt and track that, since it’s a buff on yourself and its timer overlaps with Frenzy, but that’s much worse than using an addon in my opinion.

Another alternative is to download the addon NeedToKnow which allows us to create several aura bars separate from other UI elements. You can freely pick which targets to monitor and what buff/debuff to look for.
Along with changing the general appearance of the bar.
Again, whether you want a separate icon to track or an aura bar is entirely up to you. It’s about personal preferences.
What about the final rework and 45% dps reduction of BM spec this week?

You can set your pet to your focus target and make sure pets are set to display buffs
