Still waiting on an explanation here
Well there’s the first problem. Nobody should need more than one addon for any purpose.
I don’t use these addons, so I don’t know what is or is not automated, but lashing out at someone is inappropriate. Not being there, I can’t know what was said to whom by whom but perhaps language would be more appropriate than spam in cases like this. Having two or more of these addons is ridiculous, no matter the configuration thereof.
Not in the case of a WoW addon - users cannot know ahead of time if they will do what they are supposed to, or if they are bugged and do something different. With a car, you know what it is capable of ahead of time and choose to disobey traffic laws. So that is a bad example.
Because people are blaming the user for something the author is responsible for.
Oh, I agree. Completely. The addon clearly needs re-working to be more effective regardless.
Agreed on this too, but you can’t control how many people use the addon and how they have it configured. It’s something that will have to be tolerated until the addon is updated, which it should be. Something like a check to see if (rare) has been announced by someone else within the last (time frame).
You know, whoever wrote that into their addon really should know better. No one is going to make it there on time.
And that’s all we’re really asking for, but it has to go both ways. And some people don’t want it to, instead opting to get people silenced for absolutely no reason.
Did the author download the app and install it onto your machine? Did they place it into your addons folder?
No. You did. Therefore you are responsible. Black and white. Clear as crystal.
I would be responsible for having the addon and the ramifications thereof - but I would not be responsible for what the addon does. That lies with the author.
Let the punishment fit the crime… They downloaded the app with the intention of being helpful to their fellow player.
No worries, I’ll balance the scales and will just pop Incarn on all the rares I see and kill them before anyone shows up.
I guess in your mind I’m the good player though right? After all, I didn’t clutter up your general chat.
Edit: This forum really will complain about anything…
Wait…if you don’t want them then why are you worried about farming them with addons?
Such nonsense. If he really feels playing the game is “depriving” people of their time, he needs to quit playing.
I just want to jump in here because I have used one of the addons, and I actually have yet to see anything from a different one when I am on. It will announce that a rare is up if you target it, but if someone else has already done this in the past few minutes it will print out a chat message telling you exactly that. So I am trying to understand how all these people are posting the same message over and over. From the tiny bit of detective work I just did, it appears that these issues may be from just one of these addons.
It looks like there are only 3 that are current, one of them is the one I have used that won’t repeat messages. One actually says it uses a hidden chat channel for it’s announces and the last one is most likely the culprit as it doesn’t seem to have anything blocking the spamming.
So maybe what needs to be done is just remove the one that is actually doing the spamming instead of punishing everybody for the wrongful actions of someone else ? Personally I like the hidden chat channel idea myself and later will be uninstalling/installing that one to see how well it does.
Umm, no. While the Addon creator certainly shares blame, the user is 100% at fault for the actions of things they installed. That’s why people have been banned/suspended for using automation addons/scripts/bots in the past.
You totally missed the point.
I agree that the addon being considered spam is dumb. I think it’s a helpful addon.
What I’m arguing Sakurä with is that they think the person who’s responsible for the “spam” is the author.
So forget the argument on where or not it’s spam. We’re already taking the given that it is spam, and now trying to say who is responsible. It’s a tangent argument to original post.
Why are you trying to split hairs? You said it’s not a player problem. If they are using an addon that is getting them silenced, and Blizzard considers it rightfully spam, then it’s the users fault for using that addon. So it is a player problem.
Argh! Classic case of what happens when you assume. I thought you were arguing in favor of people getting silenced.
I agree with you on that… You’re responsible for what you put on your computer. At most you could say that the author has some moral responsibility to update their add on if they see it causing mischief, but that isn’t exactly binding in anyway.
Flight removal wasn’t the only reason for WoD sub loss, true.
It was, however, the BIGGEST reason. By far.
and Blizzard considers it rightfully spam, then it’s the users fault for using that addon. So it is a player problem.
People have appealed and overturned penalties before. Nowhere have I seen anyone actually be punished for using this addon. I see people talking about it, but I see people talking about an awful lot of things. If Blizzard is indeed considering it spam, it’s due to people falsely reporting it as such. We agree it is a problem, but not what kind of problem. And that much really doesn’t matter because at the end of the day it is a very useful addon (which we also agree on), therefore the problem is the people reporting it.
I switched to the addon cause I got tired of typing the rare name 10 times a day and having to type coordinates because SOMEONE would ask because they wouldn’t have a handynotes addon telling them where it was.
I have a macro I use to automatically print that out to General. Found it on the “Rest In Pistons” achievement page.
Being silenced for announcing rares is quite… silly, though.
I keep peeking over at the CS forums for someone to bring up their case of being silenced and I’m just not seeing any.
I find it odd that if people are truly being silenced that it hasn’t found its way over there.
Maybe I’m just missing those topics, idk
Sure, if it’s offending you then report the chat. Nothing will come of it unless enough people agree with your opinion, which simply underscores that the community is fed up with the spam of these addons or it wouldn’t be getting reported in enough numbers to trigger auto-silencing.
Back then, this was a non-issue because only party members could share the spoils of a kill. Now it’s all about participating in the kill.
And who says this is actually a bad thing? In a way, yes, I do miss the old system, but I defiantly like the idea of participating in a kill. Because it means everyone can get a chance instead of a group of people.
I’m surprised Blizz allows addons at all, that they don’t consider it cheating or a threat to their Time Metric god.
Nobody here is forcing you to use any addons. Stop saying addons are a way of cheating when addons are nothing like that.
Ironic that you would like a troll post.
Can you honestly not see yourself posting. “I disagree with what they say, so I’m going to call it a troll post.”
And who says this is actually a bad thing?
Well, OP seems concerned about people getting silenced for announcing the location of a rare. But this new shared kill system is exactly what incentivized this issue to begin with.
But that has actually nothing to do with the addon itself. And even then, we had this same thing for the Timeless Isle, where people were announcing rares, and nobody didn’t care about that, because nobody had an issue with that.
