Same reason for making free gold accounts pay once, making phone authenticators and Twitter verification with a credit card. Helps to permaban trolls, hackers and cheats when they hop accounts to circumvent bans.

Yes, that’s what’s holding me back at the moment from doing the changes, plus I need to make time available to actually organise backups etc before I start the process.

It is most certainly possible to authenticate via a landline. I don’t know if Blizzard will use it, though. I have several accounts that can do it. The system just rings your phone and then you either answer it and push any key button or it tells you a code that you type in.
It’s not the physical key fob authenticator going away .THough a lot of them are probably dying out by now. They are no longer supporting the mobile authenticator app and are now migrating it to the main Battle.net mobile app which has the mobile forums
Because “hacking” is really just social engineering. A way to grift you into giving away your account information.
If you don’t tell anyone your account information then nobody is going to hack in unless they literally blow open Blizzard account databases somehow and steal everything.
I still wonder why in gods name they post the most important information about this game on a social media platform which has so much issues with quality (Alt right!) and dwindling numbers of users.
