So Malefic Nerf on BETA

So many of us agree that a nerf was coming and needed. It was just doing too much of our damage, but here’s the issue:

We are STILL, as Affliction, depending too much on augment spells to make DoTs effective.

By themselves, on the current PTR, Agony, Corruption and Siphon Life are still only doing 5 or slightly more percent damage on their own.

This is NOT what we want for Affliction. Even if you have to nerf drain souls damage increase or Haunts damage increase to DoTs a little, do it if it means increasing our DoTs baseline Damage. This will fix many of our issues in both Raid AND Mythic Plus.

Stop making us rely on damage augment spells to make our DoTs effective.

I strongly disagree. Augment spells prevent you from a just dot’ing and then going afk to pull top damage.
If blizzard make dots a majority of your damage then it allows you to be sub-optimal in your rotation while pulling near the amount of damage as an affliction warlock who’s doing it optimally.

Its meant to be a dot class. Make the DOTS be viable.

Which issues are those, specifically? I think Affli looks pretty great in both of those types of content.

It has become a meme to say that we need to increase dot damage at the expense of other spells. And this is a little bit true, but only a little bit. I mean, we will never get dots strong enough to kill mobs on their own. They were nerfing dots already in vanilla, because their dpct was too high for the effort involved. Dots are going to be throttled, one way or another, that’s just the reality of the game.

Having said that, one does wonder what the point of doing all that work is (of playing a dot class), when our dots have to tick more than once to kill trash mobs in raids from 3 or 4 expansion ago. Our dots are extremely weak on live, and figure to be weaker still in Shadowlands.

Yeah, our dots don’t do the lion’s share of our damage and that’s exacerbated a bit on SL beta right now because there’s an incredibly OP interaction between one of our Covenant spells and Drain Soul.

I don’t really see this as an issue though, because the spec does great damage in both raids and dungeons, lacks much of the ramp time that kept Affli out of M+ contention previously, and plays quite well (this last part is subjective, I know). I’m confident that Affli will launch in SL at a much stronger place than it was in BFA, especially in 5 man content.

I wouldn’t mind if they adjusted the DoT damage mix to make them do a bit more of our damage, but they’d need to be careful not to harm our M+ viability (which MR plays a part of).

I have two fears for Affliction.

The first is Blizzard making Malefic Rapture the Chaos Bolt of the spec blurring the lines of distinction between the two play styles, moving away from dot and rot to be more like Destro’s bursting.

The second is Blizzard giving up on the class, feeling they’ve wasted too much time trying to make it work that a more preferable band aid solution is to nerf it so it’s undesirable and focus on Destro until they try again in another expansion or two.

When I play elemental in BG’s, my one dot is often the top damage. When I play frost DK, my one dot is often the largest part of my damage (although that gets an AoE spread)

Seems crazy that the dot class does not have most of its damage from dots.
