I’m one of those people that will buy things if I like them, and very much enjoy convenience when I can get it, and therefore I feel I have some experience to talk about buying things. With that outa the way:
Let’s talk boosts, and why they’re so expensive.
I’ve recently picked up FFXIV and had a glance over their cash shop. Cute outfits, the usual sort of stuff I expect to find in a cash shop. But then I noticed something else: Character boosts.
For 25 dollars, you can skip the game’s story up to current content.
For an additional 17 dollars, you can boost your character’s level on whatever class you want (plus 17 for each additional class).
So that comes out to a grand total of 42 dollars after tax for the first boost, and only 17 dollars for all boosts afterwards (since you can play every spec on the same character).
WoW’s current boost model requires you to essentially buy the game over again for every character. What is the logic behind this choice of price point? Is it because you can play the story over and over again? Is the company simply greedy? Do they keep the price high to discourage people buying it? Is FFXIV ALSO asking too much for their boost service?
Let’s talk.

Bottom line…
Company offers a product or service for whatever price they want.
Consumer has the choice to buy or not buy the thing offered.
If, at any time, you feel that what you get is not worth the price it costs, don’t buy it.

Pricing = what the market will accept and still buy at a reasonable level.

Would be neat if there were no purchasable services and people had to earn everything in game. But I’m biased because I no life this game. Looking forward to no lifing Classic.

This, yes. Their market has clearly shown they’re willing to pay for it, too.

I have assumed that they are offering boosts begrudgingly and figure they might as well bilk anyone who wants it.

That kinda falls in line with my thought that they may not have wanted to have this service in the game, and so put the price point so high that they hoped nobody would go for it. I fear that may have backfired, if that was the case.
I understand the desire for a skip button and I suppose for people who have been playing multiple classes to various levels it is a decent idea.
For new players though I think it is a disservice.

Didn’t read most of it but I have to say about the high prices especially for a 110 boost is unbelievable.
It shouldn’t be 75$ to boost to 110, maybe instead it should be like 30$ to boost to 60 or 70 but completely remove the 110 boost.
I myself have spent 100’s on boosts, faction changes, race changes…
It’s silly how expensive these things are yet I am dumb enough to keep buying them
LOWER THE PRICES!
Lower them and maybe even more will buy them so more profit in the end???

I think so too, but I also would like to kind of… understand, I guess, why they chose certain price points. If it’s some sort of industry standard, or just some arbitrary number they chose, or if there’s some actual legit good reason for why they decided that was the number to go with. xD
To say “WE SOLD 3.4 MILLION COPIES AT LAUNCH AY LMAO!”
No, you sold a buncha character boosts.
