So let me get this straight, people can sell addons now?

A certain guild released their addons/weakaura packs after the race to world face was over.

And a specific addon that they made are being sold through patreon. How is this allowed???

Better call the police!

If people want to waste money on such a stupid thing, I’m not gonna feel bad for them.

Pretty sure charging for addons is against the TOS, but it turns into a gray area if they ostensibly offer other benefits as part of the Patreon and that’s just an additional thing. Still, yeah report them, unlikely to have any effect but very funny if it does.

People selling mod access has been a thing for like 15+ years now and blizzard never steps in unless it gets massive amount of black-lash

so unless this thread gets well into the thousands with people posting about how upset they are about it don’t count on anything happening.

The addon isn’t being sold. Mods for an addon are available for free if you become a Patreon member.

There’s nothing to report, this is very old news.

i like how this sounds and I’ve said it maybe 4 times out-loud.

Yeah look addons are a weird one. There are a few that have paid parts to them but basically also open themselves up to just straight up being pirated because there isn’t much enforcement they can do if people take em.

It’s not allowed. No.

If someone’s doing it, they need to be reported and Blizzard needs to take action.

If someone wants to donate to you for modding, that’s them making a conscious donation to you in thanks for your efforts.

You are not allowed to “Sell” Mods in any way.

It is… because they just find a loophole for doing it… They get through it by putting it as a reward through patreon… And even if it wasn’t fine, is blizzard going to punish liquid?

From what I understand, all they might need is just to have a basic version of it, and they can sell an upgraded version…

is blizzard going to punish liquid?

yes. they do so to method.

Depends who you are now really, You can openly exploit to and its cool if your big enough.

Whats the difference? If I make an addon that shows a black box and then charge people to have it be useful is that OK?

Or are you pretending like locking it behind a patreon paywall is somehow different than just asking for money directly?

I’m not personally invested in this at all but by all appearances this is against the spirit of the rules.

I don’t know why people would have an issue with this.

Yep. And this isn’t new. It’s also not the addon itself. All addons are free. It’s the little mods for the addons that people figured out a loophole. You can still use WAs. Someone can even go strip that code and make the aura mod themselves and give it away.

Only dumb people are going to become Patreon members for something that can be copied and given out for free.

I think that falls under a technicality that “allows” it, even though in the ToS it clearly states that the sale of addons, or having to pay a sub to use addons is not allowed. Essentially what they did was rules lawyered it to where the WA’s would mostly work without the addon, and followed it being a perk of being part of a certain patreon tier in order to gain access to the addon. Which technically isn’t against the ToS given its not the direct sale of the addon, given you get more than just the addon for the patreon tier. Followed by acts more like a mod than a true addon, which again falls under that technicality that blizzard hasn’t addressed yet given they honestly don’t have much of a reason to.

As it stands you don’t need the addon to play at a high degree for the game, and that doesn’t include the fact that once you make a WA public. You can’t exactly keep it from not working entirely in terms of copying it and giving it to other people. Followed by there are a PLETHORA of WA’s that pretty much have the same functionality.

The only time in recent memory an addon creator got in trouble was when the MDT creator got mad at one point and locked the addon behind a paywall at one point. In which blizzard did interject over that one, and it was added back for free with the option of joining their patreon to support them.

So then anyone who has gotten them should be free to share them with others, right?

Yep. They can be copied and given out for free. Elk and I covered that earlier.

Mod access, no. Configurations, though… it’s one of those areas where the rules haven’t caught up with ingenuity.
